Have you made a "bugout kit"?
Do you have a pack full of distilled water, canned food, medical supplies, and perhaps a Coleman lantern, stove, and tent?

In other words, have you yourself prepared for what could happen if this nation goes to hell and gone?

I'm just curious, because I'm about to do so myself. I can easily forsee some very, very nasty times if * wins next year.

1. I won't need to leave my compound
Those of you in areas where life might become unbearable should!
I would ditch the water,(get a camal back and a water purifier), dry foods are better than canned. A small one burner stove would be good, ditch the lantern for a good flashlight. A good knife, and for those that are comfortable, a firearm.

9. I've always had one
I've always had bugout kits. I think I made my first when I was about six. Since that one was mainly books and toys, they've gotten more sophisticated since then...I've been expecting the world to fall apart for as ong as I can remember.

Happily, my roomies *also* expect it, and have bugout kits and a Household Disaster Protocol.

Of course, in his own inimitable way, Jag (RepubRoomie) has talked about leading the subsequent revolution after things go to hell; but if he tries, the rest of us will sit on him!

11. Disaster Preparedness is ALWAYS a Good Thing.
Runaway paranoia isn't.

Owning one's own home is probably the best survival kit you can have. I'd be sunk, but it's the truth.

14. Paranoia
You can call being prepared paranoia if you wish, until it is time to say "I should have thought of that". I guess it is easy for me because my grandfather always told me about the "great" deppresion and how bad off people were. How sunk would you be if you couldn't find work for 5 years? A paid for home, a means to feed yourself without outside sources and surplus food for sale or barter is a good position to be in.

I love living in the country!

All those weekend warriors who head for the hills would find that survival is pretty tough up there.

17. you cannot carry sufficient water
Water is extremely heavy. It is not practical to "bug out" with any great amount of water.

Where do you plan to bug out? Why would the people there want refugees living in a tent there? Refugees are unpopular wherever they go unless they "bug out" with lots of money!

Do you actually have any backpacking skills? If you do, you are probably aware in your heart that it isn't a viable lifestyle for most people for more than a few weeks.

If you expect interruptions in power, food supply, etc. the best thing to do is to harden your own home and to forge strong connections in your own community. And get rid of debt so that you cannot be turned out of your home for financial reasons -- times may be about to get very tough indeed.

Just my humble thoughts on the matter.

Or whatever they are called. Also boiling works. Yes we have one and the hunting cabin is only two hours away.

23. We have a place picked out...
It's on a mountain somewhere, and sufficient for hiding in.

Between the four of us we *do* possess a lot of wilderness survival skills. The goal, if dystopia falls, will to be avoid other people as long as possible (and stop Jag from giving into temptation to lead revolutions).

19. Us liberals need to take a page from right wing fanatics
We should have compounds spread out all over the country, so they are no more than 3 days travel for anybody. They should have well water, access to farmable soil, plenty of accomodations, and weapons out the wazoo with ammunition to last generations.

I'd be happy with the last 2 parts.:P

20. Fanatics?
I have found that self sufficency is found among all political bents. There is nothing "right wing" about preparing for the worst. I bet nobody in 1928 thought they would go through a major depression, followed by a world war in which rationing of food was the norm. Even now, there are people in our country who thought they had it made....

The deeper the current economic problems get, the more I worry. They can't keep lowering interest rates, people are still losing good paying jobs. It doesn't look good!

21. Yes, fanatics
I'm talking the guys who like to wear camo and play army. The one's who think they've claimed independence and are another country. The ones who have more military hardware than some 3rd world countries.

But if things get as bad as you suggest they might get, we'd definitely have to get armed, and well armed. There are already plenty of people who would welcome the anarchy as an opportunity to shoot liberals.

22. I have cammo!

I do have my old bdu's from my days in the corps but I don't know where they are stored! My uniform on the farm is bib overalls and a ball cap.
I am more interested in economic survival and simple living. The first step in survival preperation is to live debt free.

How long do you think those militia types would last? Probably all up dead in some tribal dispute!

24. CASH!
Damnit, I think I got that from Dr. Phil, and I hate to admit it. But cash would be very useful in an emergency. Esp. if the ATMs and credit card machines were down. It's best to have several hundred in cash at all times.
