Just put my dog to sleep
Muggsie. 14 yrs old. She was my husbands dog. Now he, and she, can be together. She was very old, and she was dying of cancer. I couldnt let her suffer. Ill miss her, and I miss him. Here's to you, Muggsie , old girl. You were a grand and beautiful basset hound.

14 is a nice long life for a bassett, though...you must have taken great care of her for her to make it that far... I am sure if it is at all possible, Muggsie and your husband are looking out for you.

I want you to know that even though we don't know each other, I often think of you and send my prayers your way.

15. Mari, I feel the pain with you, just had to do that myself
Skye was a Rhodesian Ridge Bassett, a one-of-a-kind original. We had to put her down this summer. She had some sort of tumor impinging on her lungs. Skye was my best friend and got me through a lot, but I couldn't watch her suffer anymore. Keep Muggsie in your heart and she will be yours forever.

that would make it one year. I dont think they can keep them more then a year...but who knows!..I wont tell him about Muggsie til he returns...its hard enough for him knowing his dad died.
I cannot wait til 2005...and have to believe the great spirit is going to give me a break for a while from death in the family.
Of course..I have to think of the Iraqi people and the hell they go thru every day, to put my own grief in perspective.

I lost my Basset Hound a few years ago. He was a male 9-year-old tri color. His name was Muggs. I lost him to cancer. I still miss him. He is irreplaceable. I have only recently been thinking of
getting another pet. A Bassett of course. I do know how you feel. My deepest sympathy.

34. you have my prayers dear lady. i have been there more than once
i have had to do it twice this decade and each time they died in my arms. now my beloved kuvasz Kodi is 12 and having a hard time getting up. as i look at her and hug and dot on her each day i know the time approaches when i will have to show how much i love her in the saddest way imaginable.

just believe with all your heart that now she is gone you treated Muggsie thru her life as you now wish you had during this time of sadness and reflection.

peace, gal.

if after i die i am sent to a place with no dogs, i know i am in hell.

"Tribute to a Dog.

"The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son and daughter that he has reared with loving care may become ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him when he may need it most. Man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees and do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our head.

"The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his DOG. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as content in his love as the sun in its journey throught the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth an outcast into the cold, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard him against danger, and to fight against his enemies. When the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws and his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

-Senator George Vest, 1870.

this tribute hangs on my wall over my pc surrounded by dozens of pix of my dogs.

The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

47. The Rainbow Bridge
Sometimes it happens in reverse...

*****************************************************

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Muggsy was very lucky to have someone like you when she needed you. It must have been terribly hard to do your duty by her, but you came through. Well done.
When the Man woke up he said, "What is Wild Dog doing here?" And the Woman said, "His name is not Wild Dog anymore, but the First Friend because he will be our friend for always and always and always."
