Don't get me wrong, I love the man, but he should stick with campy acting rather than torturing us with campy singing.

11. Thank God, I thought I was the only one
When I was growing up in the nineties my mom looooooved 10,000 Maniacs. I must have heard every song they ever over a hundred times. I actually like some of them for their lyrics and subject matter, which comparatively speaking is fairly sophisticated for pop music. Yet she has the most aggravatingly incomprehensible nasal singing voice. I can't understand a word that she says without the liner notes even though I've heard it so many times. I'm accustomed to classically-trained singers, who sing from their chest and throat rather than their head, which is one of the reasons Merchant constantly sounds flat.

I remember wishing desperately that they could redo all of their music with another vocalist.

53. I knew the Maniacs personally--sorta
They are from my hometown, Jamestown NY. I remember when they would play at local clubs I couldn't understand a word she was singing. I asked my friend, John Lombardo(who was a founding member but who later dropped out just as they were getting really popular), what the hell she was singing. He explained that she just likes to sing random syllables and sounds and it isn't even words at all sometimes. I doubt that she is still doing that, though. I think I will start a new thread called "Who do you know that's famous?"

48. I'm a big Talk Talk fan-- and she damn near ruined that song for me
and I wholeheartedly agree about Natalie Merchant. Yeah, sure, she's a right-on PC meat-hating sister, but she's really got to get over herself.

She made some dumbass comment at a festival show here about ten years ago, how she was angry with some of the corporate sponsors of the gig for defiling the planet and destroying the earth-- neverminding the fact that the massive amount of electricity she needed to perform was being generously supplied by the nuclear reactor 40 miles upstream from her.

Pretentious, self-rightious liberals really piss me off. Especially the ones who drive gas-guzzling cars and buy expensive material things and then act all 'proletarian' on you for eating a hamburger. :eyes:
