Heh...my 3 yr old tells off * on TV
Everytime * comes on telly I taught my 3 yr old to yell "Hey Shrub, go back to your planet!". But lately, she's begun ad-libbing, so now the diatribe goes thusly:

"Hey Shrub, go back to your planet! You're a bubblebutt, and you're in trouble!! I'm gonna smack your bum and you go sit on the couch!!"

Utterly reduces me to tears of laughter...:D

4. Just FYI...
"Bubblebutt" seems to be *the* insult in her pre-school. Just hearing a 3 yr old yell at the pResident that he's a bubblebutt is the single greatest thing EVER! :D

6. Would love to put her in the greeting line at some GOP fundraiser
where Bush is present.

My seven year old niece has a very conservative GOPer teacher (who has a poster of Clay from American Idol on the classroom wall).
Anyway, the school was having some sort of patriotic day and the class was told to write a paragraph about why they were proud to be Americans.
My niece struggled with it for some time and finally in frustration raised her hand. When her teacher asked her what the problem was, my niece says "Well I'm not very proud of the way America is acting towards other people". Her teacher and the other students made gasping and giggling sounds. Her teacher said something like, "well surely you are proud of something about this great country you live in." My niece thought some more and said. "Well, I guess I'm glad I can write that without getting in trouble". Which of course left her teacher no other option than to agree! :7

7. Good parenting?
Doubtful the 3-year-old understands why, and is parroting Mommy. She is learning to not think for herself.

10. Bullshit
Everything you do she learns by. I'm not going to lighten up--it's disgraceful. When she learns how to understand why she shouldn't like someone, then she's entitled to. Otherwise everybody should get a fair shake.

Unless of course you want to brainwash her, then you're doing a very good job.

16. mindless insult insults in lieu of a thinking reply???
you mean like "bullshit" and "(doing a very good job) ... brainwashing her" as in your previous post (#10)?

short bus president's comment was spot on. how is it that you think children develop judgement and critical reasoning skills. are they simply endowed with it at age 13, or 16, or 21, or whatever? or maybe it's that they see mommy and daddy approving or some people and actions and not approving of some other people and actions, and eventually they start to see patterns as to the sort of things that get approval and disapproval.

this is how children learn morality, preferences, tastes, and judgement. the age of reason is when they start learning how to think for themselves and make judgements for themselves and less directly on what mommy and daddy judge on. but they can't get to that point if they don't first learn that people do make such judgements, that they make them based on certain rules, and they see the reasoning process. then eventually they learn to tweak and personalize that process.

to expect a parent to not teach a child that opinions exist and to prepare the child for vocalizing opinions and passing judgement until they can actually reason for themselves is to ask that parent to raise an amoral child incapable of judgement.

brainwashing? it's called parenting.

17. Thanks unblock...
I would like to add that the initial statement was TAUGHT. The ad-lib was all her. I like to think she's astute enough on her own to get the willies from dubya and hurl her own, finely crafted and beautifully delievered, might I add, insults. ;)

Oh yeah, and what WAS I thinking trying to instill what I thought to be a commonly held (on this board anyway) belief that if something is wrong to speak out about it in my CHILD?!?! THE HORROR!!!

26. oh no! a lack of critical thinking in a 3-year old!
if you've ever known even a 5-year old, you'd know that the height of their critical reasoning skills is parrotting back whatever you say, usually until you want to head straight for the scotch.

if you're trying to teach critical reasoning skills to a 3-year old, good luck. you might even have some success with it, hell, what do i know. my job as director of analytics for a financial firm in new york basically is to be one of the best critical reasoners in the world. i aced the analytic section on the GREs, aced the math section, and missed only one question on the math sats.

i've heard some old tapes of me as a child, and i didn't display any critical reasoning until the age of 8. before that, i did my best to act just like my father in every way i could. i think i managed to get the hang of that critical reasoning thing, though....

31. Kids are only
capable of learning reasoning on subjects they understand; at birth it's "I'm hungry", or "I'm cold", etc. At three they can understand hate, they can understand love. They can understand fairness. But when you teach a child to pass judgement on a subject like politics that he can't possibly understand, you also teach him that that it's OK to judge someone just because others are doing so. And, I'm sorry, but that approach is what is responsible for racism and a host of other social ills. Everyone thinks I'm flogging a dead horse, but as a parent you are setting the stage for the rest of his/her life. It's an important issue.

Re: your accomplishments with your financial firm and your SAT's--sounds like you were fortunate enough to have a dad who taught you (most likely early on) to understand an issue before judging it.

Edited on Sat Sep-13-03 06:26 PM by wtmusic
Excuse me, but neither "Bullshit" nor the "brainwash" comment is an insult. Zero for two.

You're argument that the child is learning 'that opinions exist' from this example is absurd. She is learning that very specific opinions are better than others and is rewarded for copying them.

There is NO critical thinking or reasoning going on in this behavior whatsoever.

someday.

Take it from me: just because I was for something (anything!), my teenage daughter demonstrated her independence by having to be against it.

This child is THREE. Not THIRTEEN. I'm sure she'll be a completely different person by then.

Lighen up, Francis. ;)

9. Imitation is pretty good thinking for a 3-year-old.
And creativity is even better.

Not that you'd have to be any smarter than a 3 year old to know that Bush is a bubbleass.

15. Yeah, I'm a little uncomfortable with it too. When the story of my niece
was told to me I asked her Mom if she had been influencing her daughter.
She said not directly but that due to her many political activities and overheard conversations her daughter (who seems to hear and see everything) has just picked it up. Her father is much more neutral and/or moderate in his thinking but my niece isn't apparently. I think kids will just pick stuff up that's going on in their enviroment.
This niece is precocious and seems to understand some very complex issues, so who knows...

It's another matter though to prompt children, feed them lines and encourage them so that it becomes a way to please Mom or Dad.
