1. Hold the
ctrl-alt keys and hit PrtScrn (normally just to the right of the function keys)

That dumps the screen in windows bit map format to the clipboard. You can then paste it into another document, like a Word document.

Just kidding... more than one Operating System out there. I think you use ctrl-PrintScreen on Windows - maybe alt-PrintScreen

Edit: or maybe even hold Ctrl+Alt+PrintScreen, like robg said.

5. On Mac OS X...
Cmd-Shift-3 captures the whole screen
Cmd-Shift-4 gives you a lasso to capture a particular part of a screen

Both functions will deposit an uncompressed PICT file on your desktop.

There are other variations also, which I don't know off hand. Always found this way cooler and more flexible than the Windows method. I just wish you could opt to have them captured as JPG instead of PICT.

6. In Mac OSX
There is actually a little program called Capture. Haven't used it so don't know if it still give you pics or not. I think it's in the utilities folder. If it's something you use a lot you could add it to the dock.
