Sitting in a park in Paris, France Reading the news and it sure looks bad They won't give peace a chance That was just a dream some of us had Still a lot of lands to see But I wouldn't want to stay here It's too old and cold and settled in its ways here Oh, but California California I'm coming home I'm going to see the folks I dig I'll even kiss a Sunset pig California I'm coming home
I met a redneck on a Grecian isle Who did the goat dance very well He gave me back my smile But he kept my camera to sell Oh the rogue, the red red rogue He cooked good omelettes and stews And I might have stayed on with him there But my heart cried out for you, California Oh California I'm coming home Oh make me feel good rock'n roll band I'm your biggest fan California, I'm coming home
Oh it gets so lonely When you're walking And the streets are full of strangers All the news of home you read Just gives you the blues Just gives you the blues
So I bought me a ticket I caught a plane to Spain Went to a party down a red dirt road There were lots of pretty people there Reading Rolling Stone, reading Vogue They said, "How long can you hang around?" I said "a week, maybe two, Just until my skin turns brown Then I'm going home to California" California I'm coming home Oh will you take me as I am Strung out on another man California I'm coming home
Oh it gets so lonely When you're walking And the streets are full of strangers All the news of home you read More about the war And the bloody changes Oh will you take me as l am? Will you take me as l am? Will you?

I bring Joni Mitchell's "Blue" CD with me when I travel, and I will play it on the flight (or drive) home, just for this song! (the rest of the disc is pretty darn good, too)
I guess she wrote this song for Graham Nash (of CS&N), or about him or about them in some way.

I've got a long list of songs that have me missing California when I'm away. Love it or hate it, it's inspired some great tuneage, has the Golden State.

7. I'm still trying for that, you know, at least from time to time |
|
The only problem being that I have a real tough time with rhyme And I can't remember anything much about the thing that they call 'meter' So I'll just sit back and enjoy this cup of steaming hot saltpeter

6. I've lived in California all of my life but for the first five years... |
|
and three years in service to Uncle Sugar. I live here by choice. There is a reason why there are 35 million people like me. It is a good place to live. And Randy Newman has it right: I love LA! It will always be home, however far away I am.

9. Randy Newman's song is brilliant because, |
|
like most of his ditties, there's always a countercurrent beneath the surface - his song doesn't deny that LA's got problems, even as the primary lyrics celebrate the town. I've got a love-hate relationship with LA, and probably always will, but it's really got a hold on me. :-)
Hate New York City It's cold and it's damp And all the people dressed like monkeys Let's leave Chicago to the Eskimos That town's a little bit too rugged For you and me, you bad girl
Rollin' down the Imperial Highway With a big nasty redhead at my side Santa Ana wind blowin' hot from the north And we was born to ride
Roll down the window, put down the top Crank up the Beach Boys, baby Don't let the music stop We're gonna ride it till we just can't ride it no more
From the South Bay to the Valley From the West Side to the East Side Everybody's very happy 'Cause the sun is shining all the time
Looks like another perfect day
I love LA (We love it) I love LA (We love it) We love it!
Look at that mountain Look at those trees Look at that bum over there, man He's down on his knees Look at these women There ain't nothin' like em nowhere
Century Boulevard (We love it) Victory Boulevard (We love it) Santa Monica Boulevard (We love it) Sixth Street (We love it, we love it) We love LA!
I love LA (We love it) I love LA (We love it) I love LA (We love it)
:D
Yeah, baby!

11. I was expecting the Phantom Planet song |
|
of the same name:
We've been on the run Driving in the sun Looking out for number one California here we come Right back where we started from
Hustlers grab your guns Your shadow weighs a ton Driving down the 101 California here we come Right back where we started from
California! Here we come!
On the stereo Listen as we go Nothing's gonna stop me now California here we come Right back where we started from Pedal to the floor Thinkin' of the roar Gotta get us to the show California here we come Right back where we started from
California! Here we come! California! Here we come!

13. And let's not forget: |
|
Well East coast girls are hip I really dig those styles they wear And the Southern girls with the way they talk They knock me out when I'm down there
The MidWest farmers' daughters really make you feel all right And the Northern girls with the way they kiss They keep their boyfriends warm at night
I wish they all could be California I wish they all could be California I wish they all could be California girls
The West coast has the sunshine And the girls all get so tanned I dig a french bikini on Hawaii island dolls By a palm tree in the sand
I been all around this great big world And I've seen all kinds of girls Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the States Back to the cutest girls in the world
I wish they all could be California I wish they all could be California I wish they all could be California girls
:D
To all the girls I've loved before (okay, so maybe that's not very many :P)
