SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Summerville coach John McKissick won his 500th game Friday night, defeating Wando 34-17 in front of a packed Memorial Stadium crowd there to celebrate the only man most have known as "Coach."

"Everybody knows I've had outstanding coaches and had some for a long time, three or four that played here for me," said McKissick, who'll be 77 on Sept. 25. "Any recognition that I would receive, they would have to receive it also."

But this one was all about McKissick, who began here in 1952 when he took the job for $2,700 a year.

Achievements:

• Compiled record of 500-119-13 in 52 seasons at Summerville High.

• Became the all-time wins leader in high school football when his won his 406th game, 42-0 at Wando in October 1993.

• Has 10 South Carolina state championships: 1955, 1956, 1969, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1998.

• Has seven undefeated seasons, including a 15-0 mark in 1998.

• Has only two losing seasons at Summerville: 1-8-1 in 1957 and 5-7 in 2001.

• Inducted into the National High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.

• Mentioned in Pat Conroy's novel, "The Prince of Tides." Tom Wingo, Conroy's protagonist football coach, says "never once did I defeat one of those awesomely disciplined teams of the great John McKissick of Summerville. He was a maker of dynasties."
