Where can you find a glass thermometer anymore? |
|
My son is sick. He was running fever this afternoon. I went to Dollar General Store. I went to three pharmacies. I even went to Walmart.
There are digital ear thermometers. There are digital oral thermometers. There are digital fertility thermometers. There are even digital butt thermometers.
But I can't find a goddam glass oral thermometer anywhere.
I bought a digital thermometer--$10.00. It read 99.6 on my son. Five minutes later, it read 100.4. Then it read 98.1.
I'm taking the damned thing back tomorrow. I guess I'll have to look on ebay for a glass thermometer.

because they contain mercury...I work in a hospital and we had to replace ours with the digital thermometers..and in my experience they are inaccurate. edit: The digital ones are inaccurate.

12. The digitals or the mercury thermometers? |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 11:36 PM by jchild
The mercury thermometers have always been very accurate to me.
The digital seems unreliable, but I will trust your professional opinion. :-)
Edit: Just saw your edit. Thanks for the info! :-)

10. That's what I was wondering... |
|
I think, too, that the department stores like to stock them because then you have to buy those stupid plastic shields to put on them, vs. a glass thermometer, which can be sterilized.

17. You don't have to use those shields |
|
I wipe down the digital themometer with 99% alcohol and that works fine to keep it sterile.
Sounds like you got one with a dying battery - digitals are more accurate than old-fashioned ones, and don't contaminate landfill with mercury when you discard them (or after they break).

11. Aww...thanks! I think it's just a bad cold. |
|
We were the first two cases of the flu in my home county last year. That CAN'T be happening again. No!!
I work in a college town, and I brought the flu home to my home county last year. I was diagnosed with Type A flu first, then my son was diagnosed a couple of days later.
He cannot be the first flu case this year. It just can't happen two years in a row.
Thanks for the vibes. I'm going to Walgreens tomorrow. :-)

18. Please make sure to get ones filled with alcohol |
|
the ones with Mercury can be extremely dangerous if they break...
Science and medical supply stores will have them for sure if you can't find one elsewhere. Also, the ear-based thermometers ought to be extremely accurate--I give them my full recommendation.
