Punk lyrics vs. Hip Hop lyrics
ever notice one theme of them are basically polar opposites?

Punk bands: we play basement shows, we don't care about money, we want to stay underground and true, etc.

Rappers: I'm rich as fuck, I get lots of girls and have cool cars and I'm going to get more rich...

I find it ironic because of some people I know who basically listen exclusively to those two genres.

1. Humans are complex.
While the punk and hip hop cultures have a few things in common, they're really fundamentally very different.

I think the punks are rebelling against their rich parents.

The rap scene is rebelling against their poor ones.

3. Hey, baby!
:hi:

I listen to both and I'm not rebelling against anyone at the moment. Except maybe you, but that's another matter. :P

I am old enough to remember when punk first hit the scene - London or New York - it's still in dispute. I call New York - CBGBs. Anyway punks then weren't rebelling against rich parents. They were rebelling against the stifling attitudes of the government and the boring, lackadaisical ways of society. In London, the economy was in the shitter and Margaret Thatcher was in charge. They didn't see much hope for change. They were young and white and looking for a riot of their own...

"All the power's in the hands
Of people rich enough to buy it
While we walk the street
Too chicken to even try it..."

6. I'm sorry. I won't let that ever happen again!
Whatever you say is the very foundation of truth, justice and the American way. I was wrong. Mea Culpa. Can you ever forgive me? Please, I am sorry to have challenged you is such a way. I promise it will never, ever happen again. Can we still be friends? Is it thick enough for you or do you need another layer? :*

2. You're clearly listening to the wrong hip-hop.
My musical tastes are primarily punk and hip-hop, and I can assure you, it is not the "I'm rich as fuck, I get lots of girls and have cool cars and I'm going to get more rich..." hip-hop you're talking about.

10. Although there are exceptions...
The Sex Pistols were managed by a guy who used the band to make clever satirical points about exploiting shallow youth rebellion for $$$. See the name of their film: "The Great Rock and Roll Swindle."

And there are underground hip-hop artists who have a lot deeper lyrics than the mainstream shit about drinking champagne and collecting prostitutes, jewelry and mansions.

12. Both things are just part of musical evolution
Art Rock brought on Punk and too slick overly produced R& B brought on Rap..Music became big buisiness and people went back to enjoying the real parts of it like energy.A good thing happened when people could start making thier own records without going into as studio that cost 200 bucks an hour.
Rap/hip hop and punk are an answer to slickness then they become slick.
So what do you think is next ?

14. The roots of hip hop and punk are actually intertwined.
There's a number of similarities.

18. Chuck D cites the Clash as a main influence
to give just one example.

What's that I hear? ah yes, Lee Perry lurking in the background somewhere....
