I just talked to mom. She is voting for Kerry. We live in NY, so it might not matter, but this has been a personal issue for me for many months.
A little background. I grew up in a moderate republican NY house. Mom and Dad voted for Cuomo and Koch (NY Dem gov and mayor) but always voted repubican for POTUS.
In 2000, I convinced my dad to vote Gore. My mom followed my dad, but was less convinced than him. Shortly after the election, my dad died. My mom jokingly said she would never vote for a dem again, since my dad died right after he voted for one the first time. We joked about it, but after 9/11 she made a clear move to supporting bush.
We have argued adn talked about it for months. I just got off the phone with her, and she told me she made up her mind. She is going to vote for Kerry. She is in the camp that thinks he is not the best candidate the dems could have put forward, but since he would do a better job at making to world safe from terror, she is going to vote for him.
It has been a difficult battle, but I did it.

I wish I could get my life long republican dad to vote for Kerry. I have been working on him for months and while he doesn't like Bush and HATES this war, he can't get past that republican hurdle that Edwards is a trial lawyer.
Sheesh!
My only hope is that he votes for nader! ;)

I've got a few conversions under my belt, also. But I really think Kerry made it easier for me. The people I've talked to said the debate performances had a lot to do with their choice not to vote for Bush. I'd like to think I had something to do with it just by opening up a dialogue with them, but I've got to say that Kerry sure did make my job easier.

8. The debates helped, but it was bush who helped the most |
|
My mom was not impressed with Kerry at the debates, but she did say she was embarrassed to have bush, the POTUS, tumble and grope his way though basic conversations. She was very turned off by how inept he is.
Though I think she is voting for the old "lesser of two evils" approach, its still a vote for Kerry, and I am happy regardless of the reason.

My "little" sister (god, she's almost 30 now) had to move back in w/ mom last year. she has voted republican for 12 years now. She let me know that she is joining mom and voting for Kerry.
Thats 2! I know these things always come in threes. (or is that celebrity deaths, I get confused)
