1. The enduring sexism in childrens' departments is sickening.....
I'm always reminded of it during the holidays when they start showing
all those toy ads on TV.

9. My mom refused to buy me Transformers as a kid.
She said they were for boys, and why couldn't I just ask for Barbie like a normal little girl. Hell I thought Barbies were lame, the only dolls I ever liked growing up were Jem dolls 'cause they were freaking huge and they actually looked interesting, with the freaky outfits and technicolor hair and stuff.

I troll toy stores a lot for action figures and the "girl toy" aisles sicken me. From birth on up it's like nothing but training on how to be a proper hetero breeder. And of course if boys play with doll babies then there's something "wrong" with them. :eyes:

Once I saw a white Ken doll pushing a stroller (ostensibly he was supposed to go with blonde Barbie holding a baby). I moved the Barbie and stuck a black Ken doll next to him. Yeah, I'm a little subversive. :P

19. An unbelievable book in my Soc class...
Had babies and colors and had a different baby for each color. Not only were all the babies boys except for pink and purple, the yellow baby was an Asian and the brown baby was African American... wtf?

2. God I hate this society sometimes.
'Cause, we all know it's EITHER little princess OR baby genius.

Stupid rigid gender role boxes.

17. I got my son a Barbie car -
he wanted one. No big deal. I think the gender thing is absurd and I thought society had moved on from the weird toy gender thing. Toys are toys. Most boys like the dollhouses, too. Weird planet, as my husb. always says.

10. I would totally buy the princess thing for my son, if I had one
And of course my fundie family would be pissed off and call CPS on me. Stuff like that is why I'm childless by choice. :P

8. The problem was...it was further labeled by gender.
Now, these particular parents-to-be probably wouldn't care, because they realize their newborn isn't going to have gender confusion because of the word "boy" or "girl" or some failure of color-coding...

But still.

7. For this christmas my 3 year old daughter wants 2 things...
..a princess costume and a toy tool set.

And you know what her favorite thingsto do lately? Play pretend beauty parlor, or bang on my drum set and play my guitars

And you know what? That's just the way I like it on all counts.

11. one thing that drove me crazy when my daughter was young
all the girls dresses ended right under the butt, like it was cute for a two year old to wear these short little things that were made to show off the frilly diapers. There was no way she could raise her arms or bend over and not show her underware (diapers). All the little girls clothing was made that way.

So my sister and I handmade all of her cloths.

It seems that things have changed now, thank goodness.

14. When I buy a baby gift, I refuse to buy pink or blue.
I always will choose a neutral color, maybe get something green. The pink/blue thing has always pissed me off, but what upsets me more about what you saw in the store is the use of "baby genius" for boys. If they used a princess for girls and a fighter/warrior for boys, that would still piss me off, but to use genius for boys, the implication....... AAAAAAAAAARGH!
