Thanks to the DUers it was First Place Chili!
Make no mistake, DU has some of the FINEST cooks known to humankind! The big chili cookoff was today and we tied for First Place in the "People's Choice" category.

The Dem candidates I made chili for were interviewed on a couple TV stations and their names will be in the local newspapers. We served over 430 bowls of chili and they met around a thousand people today. We could not have asked for a better day for them.

While the chili cooked we made brauts and hot dogs and gave those away for lunch. We made it into a big party and a lot of folks just came up and hung out with us.

I was rocked at one point when this older gentleman came up and sat down and started talking. He started out by telling me he's a Republican and has been all his life. We joked a bit about making sure he got a "special bowl" of chili, then he looks at me and says, "That clown in the Whitehouse has got to go." I about dropped my spatula! He went on to say that he thought we had no business in Iraq and that Bush is an idiot!!

I offered him a second hot dog!

It was a most excellent day, and I owe that "People's Choice" award to the evil DUers. Thanks to you all!

Laura

5. Two parts perspiration and a lot of Cumin...
I can give you the list of what wwent in it, but we made over five gallons, so proportions are a bit on the big side. :)

We started with Beef Chuck cut in cubes. (about an inch square--a little over 8 lbs.) Brown it with chili powder and add to the kettle.

We also added beef base (bullion) and tomato juice. Let it simmer and add Cumin and Allspice and Oregano and more chili powder.

Sautee garlic and onions and red and green peppers add those to the pot.

Add sea salt and brown sugar and some fresh lemon juice. Let it cook a while and add crushed tomatos. Add more spices. Make it smell like chili...

Add ground Ancho chilis.

Add one jar of Mole sauce.

Add more spices to taste. Simmer another couple hours.

Add beans about an hour before you serve it.

Re spice before you serve. Add more lemon juice if needed.

Sorry, that is about the best i can do on a recipe!

Laura

6. aren't those converts wonderful?
I mean, even if they don't totally convert to our side, at least to know that there are some repugs who can't stand that blueblooded ass in the white house is wonderful.

congrats on a great day!

8. Good work, Laura
Be sure to come to FUNDAY X and not only will we let you make a batch up for us but, hell, we'll even let you shove the Big Spoon down Andy the Right Wing Republican's throat. Lord knows he needs it.
John
It is now 279 days, ten hours and seven minutes to FUNDAY.

9. FunDay Chili?
Hmm. If it means more DUers will come I'd be happy to make a pot of chili. I dunno if you WANT five gallons of it, but I'd think my big stock pot would probably make enough. If you WANT five gallons, I used a borrowed turkey fryer and it held it all...

We can discuss heat levels when we get a bit further into it. I made it at a moderate heat level yesterday. Kevsand tasted it and said it was "bland" given what I make here at home... I dunno if Andy the right winger is up to my usual level of chili.

He does have a bitchin Camero, however, so he might surprise me.

FunDay chili will most certainly mean that I have to make it up there the night before because this stuff cooks all day. It will be a race to see if I can stay sober long enough to finish cooking the pot!

10. You did the work. Congratulations and good luck to your candidates.
It's a cool, rainy afternoon in Texas. Where's my bowl of chili?? I am so happy for you. Hugs and kisses.
