This Nicole Kidman movie's gonna catch some hell. I don't care what the context is, that ain't right.

<Snip>
It's been described as Mary Kay Letourneau meets "Ghost."

But Nicole Kidman (search) insists her new R-rated movie, which features a shocking scene of the Oscar-winner naked in the bathtub with a 10-year-old boy, is done in the best possible taste.

"Yes, it's an unusual scene, but the whole film is unusual," Kidman says of "Birth," (search) the controversial film that was booed at the recent Venice International Film Festival (search) and is likely to spark outrage when it opens here Oct. 29.

"It's not about sex, you know, it's certainly not about sex. It's about love, it's about being ... under the spell of somebody."

1. Artists should be free
to explore any and all aspects of life. I haven't seen this movie but I certainly support the right of the filmmaker to express his point of view. In the seventies a French movie called "Murmurs of The Heart" explored incest between a mother and her pubescent son. I don't recall any such uproar. As I recall it was a pretty good flick. Making a movie about a touchy subject doesn't necessarily reflect an endorsement of the behavior examined.

2. Remember the 1979 recall of "The Tin Drum"
over a much hyped oral sex scene between two youngsters? That scene was extremely nondescript. Not only did nothing even close to real sexual conduct (or anything close to nudity) occur between the young actors, their parents were on-set to supervise the filming.

An insane moral crusader--who, by the way, hadn't even seen the Academy Award winning film--led a charge to take back every copy of the film purchased in Oklahoma City. The infamous scene causing this was only seconds long, shot artistically and in good taste.

If the Kidman film actually shows this type of thing (or alludes to it in any subtle way) American freepers are set for nukular meltdown.

4. A meltdown? Probably....because just like homosexual men,
10 year old boys threaten their manhoods.

However, if it were a man with a girl, all you would hear from the Zionists (or Christians, if you must) is "well, that's disgusting." Period. End of comment.

5. Found this on IMDB.com about "The Tin Drum"...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078875/trivia

In June 1997, at the urging of a Christian fundamentalist group and after viewing only a few isolated scenes, an Oklahoma County District Court judge declared that this film contained child pornography (as defined by Oklahoma's obscenity laws) and as such was illegal. Without obtaining the necessary search warrants or court orders, police in Oklahoma City confiscated all copies of the film from libraries and rental outlets. They intimidated video store managers into supplying them with the addresses of those currently renting the movie, went to those homes, and confiscated those tapes as well. The local District Attorney declared that anyone possessing a copy of the movie would be arrested. Within weeks the D.A. was forced to back down on this statement, and by December most of the seized videos had been returned. By October of 1998, over the course of rulings in several related lawsuits, the U.S. federal courts found that the confiscation of the tapes had been unconstitutional, and ruled that the movie did not violate Oklahoma's state laws. The U.S. Court of Appeals closed the final case in May 2001, and the movie is once again available for rental in Oklahoma County.

The more things change, the more things stay the same...

9. Oops, should have been "1997" not "1979" - Tin Drum came out in '79
My mistake. Thanks for clarifying.

6. Most reviews of the movie concentrate on its lameness.....
Apparently not one of Nicole "Beard" Kidman's greatest moments. And the reviewers all pointed out a certain sickness, as well.

I don't say the movie should not be shown. But nothing I've read tempts me to toss any money in its direction.

13. Naked Nicole Kidman sells, sorry kid!
The whole thing is very weird, like she's justifying it to herself.... basically they just manipulated this kid.

He didn't have access to the script, the reaction shots weren't filmed with him on set, according to Kidman they gave him some money, a nice lunch, and he really didn't know what he was doing. And his parents gave the okay.

I hate Nicole Kidman's acting, so I'll be steering clear as I do all her films.

However, if somebody else were close enough to a parent and wished to bath with them, I don't see why it shouldn't be encouraged. It is sad to see how love and nuturing between family members is twisted into something sinister by our sick society.

17. There are many reasons why it shouldn't be encouraged.
Primarily because there is so much incest and sexual abuse of children in our society. Yes, it would be wonderful to live in a society that wasn't so puritanical about nudity, but we don't. Seeing my father's penis when I was 10 years old would have felt like abuse to me, and I think to most children in our society. It would be quite a different story if we were living among a tribe in a rain forest.

18. I don't like anything that sexualizes children
I used to drive over this bridge in NY and there was a huge billboard there of a young teenage girl in a bra and panties. It really bothered me. If we are really dedicated to reducing the number of abortions and teen births and all that jazz, we would try harder to curtail the sexualization of young people in the media.

I appreciate the role of the artist - and part of that role is to push the line and shock us. But it's also the role of the rest of society to push back if they go too far. a 10-year-old child bathing naked with Nicole Kidman is clearly meant to sexually titilate the audience and that's too far for me. So I push back and say, "Nicole, you suck."

21. You nailed it. We forget that children need protection just as much
as they need to explore.

Since the movie's getting horrible reviews, you can bet we're going to hear about this ad nauseaum to get people into the theaters.

22. Exactly
In my line of work I have seen horrible things done to children. Sexual abuse in the home is more common than you would think. Free speech is fine and dandy but a minor in that position is very close to the line. Very close.

If I substantiated a report on a person doing that here in real life I would remove the child from their custody, and report the issue to the DA to investigate. They could go before a family judge and explain their thinking. Bathing with young kids is normal, 10 is not unless they are handicapped.

Poor taste.

34. How about wiccans that worship skyclad (nekkid)?
I never got in the bathtub with my daughter after she was 3 or 4 but nudity has never been an issue in my home.

I have to say that when she was around 5 and waist hieght tall as it were, I made a concerted effort to keep my johnson out of her face, and pull the covers up when she came into the bedroom, etc.

That being said, my daughter has been exposed to nudity all her life, both in my home and at numerous pagan events. I don't think that it has hurt her one bit, and I think that it has contributed to her having a healthy view of her own body.

Had the director just cut that scene out. There are ways to convey that same idea without filming Nicole Kidman and a ten year old in a bathtub.

such outrages! And, if this movie is based on a book, we should burn or ban it. That goes for Kubrick's Lolita too.

actually seen the movie yet? No? Well, Ihaven't either.. which is why I will wait until I do before I begin to accuse Ms. Kidman of pedophilia and other sundry evils. By the way.. for some reason, this scene (as it's described) made me think of another bathtub scene from a long-forgotten movie: Butterfly. With Stacey Keach and Pia Zadora...

"Pretty Baby"

If one scene has you angry that movie should make you burst into flames. personal I can't say any thing bad about it if its done in an artistic context. and isn't beyond extreme.
The thing about the good old US and i don't get it is there immediate connection between sex and Nudity I guess thats because its pumped into us because of all the media but if its just that being nude in a bath tub whats the harm in it.
