God Hates Shrimp
Shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, mussels, all these are an abomination before the Lord, just as gays are an abomination. Why stop at protesting gay marriage? Bring all of God's law unto the heathens and the sodomites. We call upon all Christians to join the crusade against Long John Silver's and Red Lobster. Yea, even Popeye's shall be cleansed. The name of Bubba shall be anathema. We must stop the unbelievers from destroying the sanctity of our restaurants.

Leviticus 11:9-12 says:
9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

Deuteronomy 14:9-10 says:
9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.
IS THIS FOR REAL?

6. I think the point of this is
that certain preachers (by no means all) love to selectively quote Scripture to back up their own views. What I find most interesting is that these same preachers seem to mostly quote the Old Testament, and not the new. As I understood it when I took my confirmation class in the Methodist Church in 1964, Jesus said that He had come to change the old laws and to give us the two commandments to live by:

Love the Lord Thy God with all your hearts, all your minds, all your souls, and your strength

Love your neighbor as yourself.

Nothing of the words of Jesus are bashing of gays that I've found. He also praised peacemakers, and those who helped "the least of these".

I know and love people who belong to churches called fundamentalists, and they WALK their TALK. They FOLLOW the commandments of Jesus and LIVE them, unlike the hypocrites.

12. Hypocrites
Jesus intimated (well, SAID) that we would have those with us... but we NEED to be careful when we call someone that - for it is damning (by that I mean, it is a deeply serious matter)... so I will not, of course, speak against fellow preachers of the Gospel... but I will HAVE to agree that many people go overboard in their zealousness and suddenly become "owners" of the keys of heaven and hell... and THAT is wrong.
The Word of God, the ministry, the spiritual -- is all taken by faith. I cannot even pretend to make YOU have faith... that is between you and God... I can tell you what I KNOW within my heart and soul (spirit), but I cannot make you HAVE faith... that is a gift of God that no man can give.
Hey, it boils down to me, as a Christian, having enough strength to keep my own faith built -- I can share, but I cannot...will not.. force YOU to have MY faith which God delivered unto me... (wow, that sounded Biblical! LOL)
Am I making sense at 10 PM (this old goat's bedtime)?

13. Yes you are indeed
and thank you for reminding me not to judge others. That is why I kept my comments about preachers general instead of naming names of individuals, so as to try not to judge. And you are quite right about one's personal relationship with God. It is personal, one that an individual can forge only by himself, and it is not my place to judge whether that relationship is 'correct' or 'right'-it is God's alone.

Thanks you for a very sensible and thoughtful post. I didn't read it last night because I go to bed at 9pm!

16. I consider
shrimp as shrimp... not fish hahaha... I do not eat fish because I wathed my uncle (when I was a child mind you) almost choke to death on a fish bone and, silly me, I have that phobia... plus I LOVE shrimp. (is shellfish shrimp?) Dunno. If so, I mis-spoke <g> or am I flip-flopping? My gawd, have I become a Repub? NOooooooooooooo!!!!

17. Yes, but your response was directly to my asking if you ate shellfish
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 09:57 AM by Misunderestimator
and you said you don't eat fish at all. Yes, shrimp is shellfish.

On edit... So, you are a fundamental Christian who believes everything written in the bible, but you eat shrimp. Ok.

18. Yep
because, when Christ came, we were set free from the law which included such things for a reason known only to God, I reckon. LOL

Anyway, does that somehow negate me as Christian in your mind? How sad.

I figured shellfish to be a KIND of fish, like a trout or bass. Sorry. My bad. I do not eat any fish then except shrimp and I still do not consider those as fish at all. I am sorry that offends you. Really. It's the world we live in now though (last days).

19. You didn't offend me at all...
I'm only questioning your stance that you believe everything written in the bible. Doesn't matter a hoot to me if you eat shrimp. Most Christians I know do not take the bible literally. Anyway, have a great day (or last days), greyfox. :)

23. Your voice is needed here; relax in the Lounge a while,
then try your hand elsewhere.

Religion can be a hot topic here; I steer clear of it most times, but you can offer some valuable insight.

24. Religion....
I try to steer clear me-self... so many hate us for no real reasons. I came on DU to see what could be done to get the Shrub out of the oval seat he stole, but immediately found folks fussing about the Passion film, etc. Joined in and boom... here I sit.

I bounce around the site, so I am familiar with what is going on... but try to stay cool `cause my idea is to find good cyber pals to enjoy discussions with --- and not all about "religion" (which was a real turn-off for Jesus BTW! LOL)

How can it be wrong to love crustaceans?

I mean... they're so cute with those little pincers and that sideways strut just makes me hot. :-)

7. Old Testament
Christ came and took away all those restrictions for those who choose to follow him. At least to hear Paul tell it.

This does still apply to Jews, however. Orthodox Jews, keeping kosher.

Everyone else is off the hook for these dietary restrictions. God only told the Jews to hate shrimp.

DISCLAIMER: Just in case you offend easily, let me tell you this is written tongue in cheek. It's all true, but no offense is intended. Feel it's necessary to disclaimer--tensions and suspicions are running high this week. :pals:

They seem to forget, though, that Jesus (as written) WAS an orthodox Jew.

Best bumper sticker I ever saw..."Jesus had a Jewish mother"

11. Not just Orthodox Jews-- Muslims, too (and many Arab Christians)
I believe it's in the Quran that Muslims are to eat the same foods as Jews and Christians. "If it is fit for them, it is fit for you" or words to that effect (I'm not a Muslim so I don't know for sure).

Even in many middle-eastern countries, the native Christian populations stay away from shellfish and pork, as they are considered unclean.

Makes you wonder what would have happened if Paul and Peter had gone east instead of west. Christianity would be a completely different beast, IMHO.
