So it wasn't much of a leap for electrified hillbilly boogie and the boogeyman to become bedfellows -- for rock 'n' rollers to combine their demonized clamor with the stuff of horror-flavored comic books and movies.
A half-century later, groups like the Cramps, which perform at the Warfield on Halloween, are still torchbearers for the groovie ghoulie set. Like Marilyn Manson or GWAR, other horror-themed acts set to play the Bay Area in the next few weeks, the Cramps specialize in a brand of popular music that owes as much to the Wolfman as to Howlin' Wolf.
Rock 'n' roll and horror, both so deeply rooted in American popular culture, complement one another, says Cramps guitarist Poison Ivy Rorschach. They also share a legacy of scaring more than just movie buffs.
