39. Accreditation Information
Bob Jones is not currently, but looking at it, sort of.

http://www.bju.edu/aboutbju/special_articles/credit

Oral Roberts University set up its on accreditation organization called International Christian Accrediting Association. The website provided on the www.oru.edu is a non-working link. Google turned up no more information about it. Doesn't seem like much of an accreditation. Here is the link about it.

http://portal.oru.edu/pls/portal30/oruefmgr.oruef_main.accinfo

I had no idea these schools, and probably a number of others I've heard of, aren't even accredited.

44. ORU is Accredited
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 12:58 PM by wow
ORU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Accrediting Association. The school is well recognized for its undergraduate and pre-professional programs. I believe the theology department is accredited somehow through the Methodist church.

While the school has a religious foundation it is primarily an academic institution rather than a seminary or Bible School. I believe that during their four years of undergraduate work students are required to complete six hours of Bible survey classes (Old and New Testament) and three hours of church history.

And contrary to common knowledge and expectations Oral Roberts is - or at least used to be - a DEMOCRAT!

I live in Tulsa and know several alumni - including some who are quite liberal. One swears to me that there used to be an active Young Democrats group on campus. Another swears that it was Oral himself who personally prohibited students from wearing black armbands on campus to protest the tenth anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

The International Christian Accrediting Association is an accrediting organization for Christian schools (K through 12 - not college). Not sure of the exact relationhip but it is somehow affiliated with the ORU school of education. This weekend here in Tulsa they have hosted schools from all over for various competitions both atheletic and academic in nature. I live just a few miles away from the campus and have had the misfortune of dealing with the traffic congestion the past few days.

On edit: I'm not suggesting that ORU does not have more than its share of freeper crazy fundies. They definitely do.

Again, on edit: Accreditation information can be found here: http://www.ncahigherlearningcommission.org/

21. Yes
they are accredited - and well over half their graduates go on to graduate and professional schools. Many of their undergrad programs are well respected academically.

It is the rest of the stuff at that school that is just nutso. O course there is a dress code and required chapel and chuch attendance. Aside from the blatant religious aspect there are also physical requirements to graduate. For example, alumni must pass a swimming proficiency test. And every sememster a student is enrolled they must pass a phys ed class that includes a 3 mile run in a certain time. Oh, yeah, and there is that pesky body composition test - if a students body fat is over a certain level then weight loss is mandated or the student is subject to expulsion from school.

I live in Tulsa. I've had many opportunities to see some of these students struggle to stay in school for reasons not related to academics or finances. Not sure if this is still true but I know there used to be a Young Democrats student organization at ORU.

7. Surprisingly, yes
At least in certain states. They go through quite an accrediation process, at least for thir graduate programs.

I was shocked too, when I found out that their master's degree program weren't a stinking pile of shit, at least not in all areas.

Some folks at LSU are hardcore KKK, neo-Nazis (secret RW societies). Bush spoke at this year's convocation and David Duke is very popular there as well.

27. Yes, it's freeper-ish but I would argue
that it's more that the people there live in a bubble. The social scene on campus focused around the Greek system especially the sororities. Mouth-breathers a plenty (or as I like to call them: the Borg from Star Trek) there.

I should know because I went there for 2yrs then left to go to school elsewhere.

University of Michigan, LSA. Not too popular, probably, but I am a former democrat, now one of the dreaded and reviled freepers, who graduated University of Michigan with a degree in sociology. I don't agree with everything on the Freeper board; there are nuts on both sides. :)

31. George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon and Bethel College in St. Paul
George Fox is an odd one, a Quaker school for fundamentalist Quakers. When Oregon had its first anti-gay initiative, Measure 9, Newberg was full of "Yes on 9" signs. "What kind of crazy Quakers are these?" I kept asking myself. When the state association of private college faculty met for its annual retreat, the representatives from George Fox were always tight-lipped and disapproving when the rest of us broke out the wine and popped a video into the machine after dinner.

Bethel College requires (or at least used to require) its prospective faculty to fill out a form stating which of the listed fundamentalist beliefs they accept.
