YES, he had his own voice pre-recorded, NO he wasn't lip synching
he was RAPPING LIVE with his own recording as a background

that's how he records ALL HIS ALBUMS

we heard the recording, and we heard his voice live as well.

in the studio, he'll have as many as 5 or 6 layers of his own voice

usually there's a minimum of 3, one of him whispering the lines, one of him just regular rapping, and one of him shouting

now it's not like he does all 3 or 5 or whatever for every song, and some songs only have 1 layer, but he employs them in different places in different songs in different ways and it really makes a noticeable difference, it makes the delivery more powerful

END OF STORY

posting this in here as well because many in the lounge probably didn't see it over in GD

1. I've seen concert footage of Missy Elliott where she does the same thing.
And you hear both live at the same time -- her live rapping is rougher but more passionate, while the recorded track is exactly like the album version, so it's kind of a weird effect.

I personally prefer 100% live music, but I guess there is a precedent for this, and am just glad Em did this song on national TV.

2. Lip synching is when you're not singing, you're just mouthing the words
Therefore, he was not lip synching. I don't get how anyone didn't notice the difference between the sound of his voice as he was rapping live and the recorded track. It seemed extremely obvious to me.

5. Me too, but I guess some kinda feel like it is cheating.
He still just told Bush to go fuck himself on live TV, you can't have bigger balls than that.

I love him!

3. So he shows up on stage, why???
I mean, if everything is already recorded, couldn't we just listen to it without him there?

8. So he shows up for "added effect"?
Or he just plays the studio tracks at live performances for "added effect"?

Please clarify.

6. I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one

I'm not an 'afficionado' I'm a regular viewer like most everyone else watching, and it looked shite to me. Deal with it. I won't drink this kool aid thanks.
I do think he is a very talented lyricist and rapper. I think his message is valuable and strong. I just think he is a crap lip syncer and 'spinning' a message doesn't work on me, which is what I feel you are doing. I'm not arguing that he may be trying to layer tracks, thats fair enough, but it looked like a terrible attempt at syncing. Especially the part where he took the mic away from his mouth and the voice kept going. I had it on TiVO so I could replay it and in all fairness, I couldn't hear a difference to prove he was layering his voice. But thats my impression and I'm entitled to it as I'm a free thinking librul!
Your post has a very 'Bush won all 3 debates feel to it'.

edited to make my point less ambiguous

10. I recorded the show and I'm just now getting to hear the second song
He turned down the volume on the backing vocals for that performance.

I don't care, he's talented, he's getting the anti-bush message out to his fans about bush and voting... IMO this guy RULES!

And he's HOT... I think some people on here are a little jealous. ;)
