Not for the victory today over Notre Dame, although I gotta say, "nice job" there, too. The Big Ten really needed that. You guys look really tough this year. Here's to The Game being a deciding factor in who plays for the MNC.
But what I'm really congratulating you for is for being 5th in Mother Jones Magazine's Top Ten Activist Campuses. I don't have a link, but it's in the print edition. Firing up joints to protest Ashcroft's persecution of Tommy Chong and the like when he (Ashcroft) should be going after terrorists? Nice. Well done.
Don't count on me saying any more good things about The University of Michigan this year, but remember this post when I'm telling Michigan jokes during the third week of November.
Edited for clarity. You have to be really clear when talking to Michigan people.

I love college football, but I'm not particularly obsessed with any team, so I feel okay with saying that ;-).
Activist campus, you say? Hmmm... I never would've know that about UofM.

I've got to give them credit where credit's due. They're a bunch of damn liberals up there. And that's a good thing.
Edited for a typo. And to clear things up for UM fans and grads.

However we will show little mercy at THE BIG GAME.
I was at Ann Arbor during the Cuban Missile Crisis and JFK's assassination. They were just finding a more activist voice. Tom Hayden was a student then and cut his political teeth on changing the restrictive hours for coed check in times. From that issue he quickly escalated to forming SDS. The seeds were planted.
When I left, the campus was still fairly "traditional" - but then evolved in the coming years.
The trustees and legislature are not as appreciative as you or I - they put a choke hold on finances even before the Michigan budget was trashed by Reugs. Probably a political remnant of the Engler years (he went to MSU)and the fact that many of them feel a more mainstream campus (ala MSA) is more reflective of the political tenor of the state. They do not like to support a more liberal and a "national" institution.
When I attended, we went to the games to see the band - now it is fun to see them win, but I do begrudge the $ funding football over other things.

The refs cheated. Michigan would have never won if not for the biased officiating.
I mean, come ON....Notre Dame got cheated at least 38 times. At least that's what I heard from a guy who's brother was there or something.

Ohio State is just as much of an activist campus, I mean, they were willing to burn their own cars to protest the school's selling out to corporate college football. that's dedication.
