I don't fit in anywhere. I'm like a hexagonal peg trying to fit in a trapezoidal hole. Being continually anxious (due to childhood environmental traumas) has made me an emotional cripple. I can't even get a sleazy pickup at a bar! (which is admittedly for the best, but still!)

There. I've poured my self pity. Now I need to play an online game and zap some bots. :D Or get zapped, I'm a n00bie to that sort of realm.

And you've clearly got too many sides to your personality. Is that some sort of Hexagonal Personality Disorder ?

16. Introvert here.
I've not been in groups or professions where I felt nurtured or encouraged to do my best. I don't put on a show to impress people. I don't schmooze. What you see is what you get. That can be the kiss of death career wise.
Even if I were to go to a DU meet-up someplace there'd be a few people I'd hit it off with I'm sure. But in no way would I be the center of attention or the most popular or interesting person there. I'd be cordial to everyone and enjoy myself.

"Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend."

28. I'm introverted too
I like people though. My mother, by contrast, is an extrovert who hates people. I know I'm different. We should all be proud to be different though, right. It is a disadvantage in some situations. Job interviews scare me, especially if I have to interview with several people. If I'm only interviewing with one or two people, we might hit it off after a few minutes. Parties where I don't know people are also scary.

31. Introversion/Extroversion is in part -- learned behavior
You can learn successful extroverted behavior --

Most extroverts must learn to be introverted in order to survive in school.

If WE extroverts can learn enough introverted behavior/skills to get through school then you introverts (schools FAVOR introverts) can also learn more social skills -- and observational skills of your environment.

No pity from me --

There are reams and reams of research literature on this topic --

Search "Individual Differences in Behavior" at any large college or university library library. You will find tons of research articles in highly respected journals -- some articles are highly technical and others can be read and understood by the general population.

40. No, it's not.
The brains of introverts and extroverts are different. Introverts have greater blood flow to and more neurological activity in the frontal lobes; extroverts have more blood flow and greater neurological activity in the temporal lobes. In other words, introverts are more thought-oriented, extroverts are more sensation-oriented. There are MANY studies that have shown this.

37. This is an internet message board. You know it's full of us introverts.
In addition to being an introvert I'm a hetero male who doesn't care that much for sports. I make friends more easily with women and gay/bi men, and at the ripe age of 25 I'm still terrified of asking women out for a date (even when they practically throw themselves at me). I also have a horrible habit of isolating myself like a old hermit when I'm feeling depressed about my life situation, nearly alienating the handful of friends I do make.

I've noticed that internet message boards seem to be full of us introverts.

42. Careful, I had a bad experience with Paxil
I was taking it for anxiety attacks. It took away all of my motivation. I haven't been quite the same since. If you do take some form of medication, always look out for side effects, and tell a doctor right away if you notice any unexpected changes in your mood.

I'm trying to combat both anxiety and mild (usually mild, sometimes severe) depression without medication. It's not easy, and I'd never recommend it for everyone. Surprisingly, though, I've made significant progress under hypnotherapy.
