Can you drop a class in the middle of the semester?
I tried to study yesterday and I was fine with all of my other classes except for my Economics class. I am a bag of nerves right now and I can't think of anything else but the election. If you drop a class in the middle of the semester do you fail that class or is it considered a withdrawal?

I don't want to go back to the class anyways because of the debate/argument that I had with the Professor over Bush. I thought that we had a student in the class with the last name Kerry until I figured out that he was calling me Miss Kerry. I don't want to go back to that class but I have no other choice.

I will be happy when the election is over and Bush is tossed out of office.

1. Go to the Dean.
if it is after the drop date, you can go to the dean of the dept and file a complaint against him.
If it is still before the drop date, do the same thing anyways.

4. It's after the date
The only thing is if I drop it I will fall 1 credit point below the full time student status. I have 4 other classes but 2 of the classes have an odd total of credit hours so I had to add something and I can kick myself now for adding that class.

2. You can, depending on the college and your major.
If the course is in your area of study, you are screwed.

Most colleges will mark it as a withdrawl, at least the ones I know of.

5. I had a choice of 4 different classes
The class fit my schedule perfect and that is why I picked it.

3. Two things to do here
Take this to the University. Calling your Miss Kerry could amount to harrasment. That's quite unprofessional if he is doing it in a mean way.

Second, most Universities let you drop a class mid-semester. It's called withdrawing a class. You will get a W on your report card. It won't count aganist your GPA, but if you are planning on going to grad school, they might give that W a second look. Usually not, W's are acceptable, just not 3 or 4 or ten. People understand that stuff comes up, a subject is more advanced than you thought it was going to be, you got sick, or you got an asshole professor. talk to your advisor for the best answer though.

7. Talk to the professor
Tell him you find his behavior inappropriate. He will lighten up on you. Believe me, most professors are scared shitless about lawsuits.

8. That is true. I had forgotten that. I had 2 W's from undergrad
and when I applied to grad school, I had to write about both of them. Naturally, I took the republican way out. I was young, dumb and stupid. <g>

9. Ask your professor for a WP
Withdraw Passing.

It won't affect your GPA.

All universities have a last day to withdraw passing, but if it's after that date and you talk to your prof, he will let you drop WP.

13. Do you have a professor-mentor who can do a readings class with you?
It's a little late in the semester to do this, but if you have a favorite professor with whom you can discuss why you are withdrawing from the economics class, maybe you can ask for the prof to do a readings class with you. I would do it for you, if I knew you. :-)

12. At my University
We professors can be accused of Malice-- this will be only thing that will "win" in petitioning a grade-- the professor has to show malice towards a student in their grade. Otherwise, a student can petition a grade etc.

As for the drop date-- for ours, it was 10/29 -- so my students are stuck with me... :)

RE: Full-time status-- make sure to check re: financial aid, insurance (if under parents' insurance) etc.-- if you drop below full-time status (varies from institution to institution) it will affect all these areas.

Stick it out and remember to document everything-- if the prof grades you unfairly--and you have proof-- petition and go forth from there.
