Should I pull my dog's tooth? |
|
his baby teeth are falling out. His right canine tooth (well I guess they're ALL canine teeth) is really loose and twisted to the side. I'd love to save it.
Can I give it a yank?

nah, he's a lover, not a biter. But he does gnaw on me occasionally, very softly, but that's cuz he's teething.

5. Perhaps give him a "squeaky baby" (toy) and it will fall out for you. |

breed Tucker and Jessie and make a superbreed of hyper-intelligent bulldogs. Or else stupid lazy collies.

17. I like to call collies Standard Shelties... |
|
;) Sheltie people get really messed up when people call their dogs miniature collies...I wouldn't know about that though...

6. Maybe giving him something |

To chew on will help ease it out instead.

he's got zillions of things to chew
I'd just sorta like to save one memento of his puppydom. I'll check his bed closely for teeth. He's on it now, chewing a rawhide stick.

10. You may have to retreive it from the other end |
|
of the digestive stream. Unless it gets stuck in the rawhide or something, he's liable to swallow it. Get used to your bulldog thinking that he's entitled to eat any random bit of mung that you may ever remove from him, or that may fall off on its own. Eye booger? Big treat. Goo that accumulates in the nasal fold? That shit's gold, man.

he gets eye boogers - only in the left eye, oddly, and he makes me wipe it clean. He's shown no interest in eating it.
Now my mail, however, seems to be a real treat.

bulldogs, and the other squishy-faced breeds, are prone to dry-eye problems. Althea developed recurrent eye ulcers last year, and had to have one surgery and is on daily Rx eye drops now. Maybe ask your vet if there's anything you can do to keep the boogery eye moisturized as a preventive measure.

25. Better check his poo, instead. |

Pups usually swallow their baby teeth, or at least that's what my vet told me. :-)

14. Depends on if you mean to pull the tooth from the dog, |
|
or pull the dog from off of the tooth.
:-)
Since I'm not a vet, I can't offer any actual advice. Though speaking personally, I'd be afraid to do it - not because of medical fear, just because of fear of pissing the dog off.

21. You could give it a gentle yank |
|
Just as you would your own, to test if it's ready to come out. If it is, it will. If not, no harm, no foul. It's going to come out anyway. I raised Boxer pups and I did pull a tooth for one of them - it was very loose and bothering her.

I tried a very gentle tug - it didn't come out. I don't wanna hurt him. I'll just wait a bit and try again.
BTW... do dogs believe in the Tooth Fairy? Do I need to leave money under his pillow?

23. The canine tooth fairy |
|
Generally leaves edibles or things to play with. Like the canine Santa Claus and the canine Easter Bunny (though the Boxers would have liked to play with the canine Easter Bunny).

24. Yes. I did that to Lucinda. |
|
If I wouldn't have done it, the vet would have. Her big tooth was coming in behind her baby tooth. He told me that if the baby tooth didn't loosen, he was going to have to pull it.
Well, a couple of days later, it was that kind of loose that just begs to be pulled. I pulled it and her adult teeth came in straight.
And I saved about $100 procedure at the vet, too. :-)
