I'm not really sure what he's done. I don't think anybody does, except those involved.

Whatever it was, though, I hope he pulls himself out of this. He's still on scholarship at OSU, and may be able to practice with them this season. I'm thinking that staying, keeping his nose clean, and doing whatever is necessary to put this mess behind him is the best option.

But whatever he does, I hope it works out for him, and I hope OSU provides whatever support is necessary (without breaking any rules).

I'd love to see him come back to Ohio State and kick some ass. I've changed my mind on this from when I posted earlier. My thinking, after some reflection, is "Whatever is best for Maurice. And if it helps OSU, too, so much the better. Just don't break any rules or undermine OSU in any way."

I wish him the very best of luck. He's just a kid, you know? It's not like he hit someone in the head with a beer bottle. (One game suspension, by the way.)

But I don't trust ESPN. They said this about him in their magazine last year. And it wasn't true.

That being said, the quote from Tagliabue seems to make this legit.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Suspended Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett has asked the NFL to change its rules and make him eligible for the 2004 NFL draft.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said Sunday that the league received a request last week from Clarett's lawyer, Alan C. Milstein.

Talgliabue told The Associated Press that a lawyer from his office would meet with a lawyer for Clarett to discuss the case, probably the week after next.

Last week, Clarett was suspended by Ohio State for at least one season for violating NCAA bylaws concerning benefits for athletes and for lying to investigators. Also, Ohio State is investigating charges that athletes received improper help in classes.

Clarett, who rushed for 1,237 yards and 18 touchdowns last season as Ohio State won the national championship, is in his second year at the school. Under NFL rules, he would not be eligible for the draft until his third year out of high school, which would be 2005.

And even if he wins a lawsuit against them, it's not a good move. He should get rid of Jim Brown now. Assuming, of course, that Brown gave him the advice that made him decide this.

Interesting fact: His mother worked for the Democratic candidate for Governor of Ohio in 2002. His father works for the Republican Secretary of State in Ohio. And my sources tell me that his father (who abandoned him as a child) is the one pushing for him to leave early for the NFL. Go figure.
