My dad told me that he lost his job as the manager of his auto-glass warehouse.
He started working at an auto-glass company in 1993, when it was a small business. The company was bought out a couple years later, and that company merged with another company. Eventually, Dad was named regional warehouse manager (in 1999, I believe.)
He had made many friends at the warehouse, and, frankly, so did I. He said, however, that they are dismissing a quarter of the warehouse managers and reeplacing them with other warehouse employees.
I don't know what to do! Dad will file for unemployment benefits tomorrow after dropping my mom off for jury duty. But what can I do?
Dad was one of the 23,000,000 million jobs created under Clinton, and has joined 3,000,000 others who lost their job under Bush.

Whatever happens you must be extremely supportive of your father right now. He needs you more than ever I bet. But don't worry it sounds like with the experience he has he'll find something.
Also I like how your mom is serving the country while your dad is getting screwed by it.

is to find ways to let your dad know that he is still needed. Many people, when they lose their jobs, suddenly feel as if they are useless & unneeded. I think this is especially true for older people, because they have worked for so many years that they feel completely lost when they do not have a job.
Good luck to your dad.

sorry- I'll bet your dad is feeling bad. Words of encouragement- Opportunity rarely knocks at the front door-something he likes better may come along now that he wouldn't have noticed if he was busy working at the warehouse. And your Dad has at least one great kid that will help him keep upbeat. good luck to him- hang in there and keep us posted on progress. Sending lots of good energy to you and your parents- redwitch

7. Are the non-managers unionized? |

I would also ask: how old is your father? Is he over 40 and being replaced by someone younger?
I am just trying to think of recourses he may have.
Do you know if he had any "demerits" against him, such as poor performance reviews or the like? Or, did he have positive performance reviews?
It just doesn't seem like there isn't SOMEthing to be done here.
May I ask what state he lives in?
I'm thinking!! This isn't right!

I lost my first job under Poppy. I know how he feels.
I just hope that whomever the Dems nominate next year can articulate a good jobs/recovery program. We can win on that alone - never mind the fact that * is a lying, unelected idiot.
<oh, the rage>
Good luck to your dad. Hope he finds something soon.

9. I'm very sorry to hear that. |

Here's something to consider. My husband and I decided that we could never count on an employer again for a living and we started several businesses. The hardest part is health insurance--we pay about $800 per month and that has to be taken out of the profits, but if you are employed only a small amount comes out of your salary.
Good luck--I know it's hard but I wish you all the best.

11. Do you have a job this summer? |
|
I can't remember if you're in HS or college. If college, what can you do to make sure that your parents aren't burdened by greater expenses in that area than they can handle now. You need to start exploring options so you can present a plan to your parents to reassure them. It's very unlikely that they will bring this up unless and until they feel totally backed against the wall. Don't wait for that to happen. Take some burden off by researching what you can do about your college expenses.
And cut any other expenses that you have to ask your parents for to the bone. If you haven't been able to get a job because of the economy, there's always cutting lawns, baby sitting and odd jobs. These may not be fun, but it will help take some of the burden out of your parents lives and make them so proud of your pitching in that it will make them feel much less stressed during this difficult time.
Beyond that, just be extra loving and supportive of your parents right now.
