I'm not looking forward to feeling this way for another 4 years |
|
Because this man has been elected I now have to ask myself the same question every time I see suffering in my country.
When I see a mother grieving the loss of her child in Iraq I have to ask myself, "Did she vote for Bush?" If she did, I have to withhold my pity...
When I see a man losing his job right before the holidays I have to ask myself, "Did he vote for Bush?" If he did, I have to withhold my pity...
When I see an African-American railing against the continued economic disparity in this country I have to ask myself, "Did they vote for Bush?" If they did, I have to withhold my pity...
When I see any woman agonizing over the tenuous nature of Roe v. Wade I have to ask myself, "Did she vote for Bush?" If she did, I have to withhold my pity...
When I see a fisherman lamenting that he cannot eat his mercury-filled catch I have to ask myself, "Did he vote for Bush?" If he did, I have to withhold my pity...
Now I realize there is no way to know who among these people did vote for Bush, but the very fact that I even have to consider this makes me very aware of how wounded I am by this election.
It's no fun having to limit your compassion and this is what I have to live with for the next four years.
