I realized something today. I never got around to seeing Going Upriver. I meant to, but I guess in the back of my mind I assumed it'd become a pretty famous film, played quite often, and I'd have at least 4 years to watch it.
I don't think I can bring myself to watch it now.

I also don't think I'll be able to watch F9/11 again either.
And I probably won't have to watch "Dr. Strangelove," because we'll be living it in a while.

2. It's worth watching, even now |

Especially if you harbor any bitterness to Sen. Kerry for conceding today, this will help you see him in a different light.
I wouldn't mind seeing it again myself. Sure, it'd make me sad about what could have been, but so many things do now anyway.
I was lucky: got to see Going Upriver in a Portland theatre introduced by Jim Rassman, Wade Sanders, and Earl Blumenaur last Saturday. Seems like a month ago...

Maybe.
I never managed to make it all the way through Fahrenheit 9/11. It just hurt too much. I tried dealing with it in half hour to 45 minute increments and just. couldn't. watch.
Kerry may be the focal point for Going Upriver, but he isn't the story, in the end. There are too many powerful cultural and historical touchstones involved for that. Give the movie a try, and stay for the end credits if you can. Both in the film and in the credits I saw some 'old friends' I'd forgotten a bit, and realized how much I missed them.
FWIW, I'm giving Kerry a little more time before I feel completely disillusioned. I'm not sure how much. Days. Weeks. Voila! a few years from now if someone finally blows the lid off BBV. I don't know. I'm so numbed by the shock, I still can't tell.
The sixties were my childhood, and it was a crazy, mixed bag. Some of it was confusing, some darned entertaining to this day, and some of it was painful, though most of the war barely brushed our family and friends. Still, it was the center of our lives for a time. How different from today. The film brought back some things I had forgotten and gave me new perspective on other things.
Your call.
