1. Cool....I did a long essay on distopian literature at A-level |
|
English Literature. (Age 18 in the UK).
Focused on Clockwork Orange, but also included Farenheit 451 and The Handmaid's Tail.
Clockwork is a fantastic, disturbing book. What were you focusing on particularly?
Incidentally, my old band once supported an act called The Korova Milkbar........don't know why I mention it.

4. Mine is for Lit and Film class |
|
so we read the book and saw the film.. I chose to focus on the film because I liked the way Kubrick put a classical track on the film much in the way it was done for Alex's aversion therapy.
One of my classmates and I were joking we were going to open a club called The Duke Of New York!

10. Appendicitis? Appendi-shitehouse more like! |
|
I'm going to dig out my old essay when I get home in a couple of weeks and see what I had to say about it - I'll try to re-read it as well.
My essay was a general comparison of several different distopian views of the future. I focused a bit on the free will aspect of Alex's aversion therapy.....
I'm at work now, but if I get a chance I'll drop back in later and say some more maybe...

explore the free will/institution thing but everyone was doing that. And our prof wanted us to have a thesis that was debatable.

8. If I were going to ask you anything........ |
|
it would be: "Did you mention that for all his charm, Alex still is not the most sympathetic character in the book?" For my money, the most sympathetic character in ACO is the prison "charlie". He takes Alex under his wing, believing him to be truly seeking salvation. When Alex tells him that he is to undergo the Ludovico Treatment, the charlie bursts into tears, terrified for Alex's immortal soul. He weeps and calls Alex "my own beloved little son in JC."
Wow. That's Christian love and mercy. Warms my heart. As does the original ending of ACO as Anthony Burgess wrote it.

13. Actually, I concentrated on the film. |
|
But I do know what you mean. In the film, I think Alex is completely deviant. I think he never was "cured" in the first place. And I have heard the argument that Alex's love of Beethoven proves there is some good in him. But he is inspired to do evil when he hears Beethoven. His screaming about Beethoven never did any thing to anyone is complete bull shit on his part.

15. The intent never was to cure anyone |
|
The intent was to eliminate the deviant element in society by any means necessary. After rendering Alex defenseless--note that if he raised his fists as if to strike, he collapsed in a fit of the dry heaves--they dumped him back among the people he wronged so they'd kill him, and prefaced his release from custody by listing in the paper exactly how to get his brainwashing to kick in.
Then they got caught. Oops.
If this was intended to be a cure, they'd have followed up his brainwashing by sending him to a different part of England, or a different part of Europe.
