My long-time Christian friend said she's giving up...
She said she doesn't think she believes in the bible anymore. Her interpretation was love, not fear and hate. She and her husband don't even want their kids to learn religion. Both are BIG time baptists. Let me rephrase - big time SMART baptists.

7. It was Thomas Jefferson who said,
"Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must approve the homage of reason rather than of blindfolded fear"

Perhaps the Chimp has never even heard of Jefferson?

Quiz question for fundamentalists;
Who does this describe?:
"A God-fearing, teetotal, anti-gay traditionalist who believes that a woman's place is in the home and that crime should be punished severely."

a)George W. Bush
b)Osama Bin Laden
c) Both of the above

The answer, of course, is c)

14. Thomas Jefferson
You forgot the word "more" In the Thomas Jefferson quote. :)

"Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must more approve the homage of reason rather than of blindfolded fear" ... Thomas Jefferson

17. Time for Secession
It's time to cut the ties that bind us to those inbred, sloped-browed, slack-jawed drooling idiots and white trash who make up the bulk of the red states.

It's time to realise that we will never be able to live in a decent society so long as we are forced into the same nation as them and so long as they have effective control over all our national policy.

The only solution is for the blue states to secede and form a more perfect union -- perhaps with some of our Canadian friends, perhaps not -- but in any case free to determine our own desitiny.

10. News flash
What the Bushbots are pushing is not Christianity. Tell your friends they should find another church. There's no reason to abandon their faith just because some crazy people are using it for political gain.

Read up on the Pharisees. They are carbon copies of the people we're dealing with now.

18. Great article Junebug
Thank you Junebug...that is just what I needed to read right now. I desperately wish I could connect with other Christians who feel as I do about politics and social issues. Alas, I live in a rural area where supporting bush is practically an article of faith in most churches. It is a great comfort to me that others who share my deep faith have also come to the same conclusions about this sorry excuse of a "leader" we are saddled with for the next 4yrs. God help us all.

side effects of Bush's marriage of church and state. He really is a corrupting influence.

11. I tell my fundamentalist friends all the time
...that the reason Church and State must remain separate is that they invariably corrupt one another. Religion doesn't need political power; it needs protection from political power.

13. Take Heart -- Do not Despair
They should not become disheartened because Bush and their fundamentalist allies won.

It is true that they used religion to advance another four years and their agenda of hatred.

Personally I am getting tired of the fundamentalists and their gloating.

History is filled with examples where groups used religion to advance their own personal agenda.

Religion has been used in this country to support slavery and the genocide against the Native Americans.

As Shakespeare once said:

The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose.
An evil soul producing holy witness
Is like a villain with a smiling cheek,
A goodly apple rotten at the heart:
O, what a goodly outside falsehood hath!

15. If your god is dead, try one of mine
People have to remember that religion is NOT God, but merely huamnity's concept of God. It is obvious that that concept has gone away from the teachings of Jesus in many churches. What is equally obvious is that there are churches that still adhere to Jesus's teachings. I suggest your friend look for one of those. Unity is a good choice for those with a mystical bent.

20. There is no room for the open minded in a lot of Christian churches these
days. A lesson they will learn when it's too late and the sane ones of the flock flee. I gave up yesterday after the "Christians" at my daughter's Catholic high school stopped just one short of stoning her. I am sitting back and waiting for the fundie's to kick the Catholics back to the curb now that they have gotten what they want out of them. And I'll try not to say, "told you so".
