to ask that the weatherman announce the current temperature in the mornings. All he gives is the forecast with tomorrow's low (the correctness of which can vary significantly) in a pre-recorded tape, so I know that actually providing current information will be tough on those news people!
Anyway, I guess I could go outside and see how it feels, but frankly my hot flashes have me commenting on how good 49 degrees feels. I don't think my 4 and 6 year olds would agree, and they're the ones dressing for school.

I wish they wouldn't use the term "normal" to mean "average." It is normal for temperatures to vary quite a bit. Why is 68 degrees the "normal" temperature for today?

I'm a nurse and I find myself explaining that just because something is not "normal" it is not necessarily pathological. It may not be the "average", but it is nothing to be worried about. A person can be "normal" without being the "average"; as you said, "normal" can vary quite a bit.
