5. HA! I mean REALLY cold...
Wisconsin seems like a cool place but I know it is ass-cold in the winter. I just wondered it it was tempered some by being near the coast...

...and only last year did we have a long spell where it was below freezing for an extended period of time - that rarely happens

20. I've been thinking the same thing
I've fought the good fight for over 2 years here in Georgia.
It was worse this time than in 2000. My entire county went red. No Dem won anything. It went 88% Republican.

I will miss my family and the place that I grew up in, but I simply cannot stay here anymore. I had it narrowed down to 5 places, but I think California is the place for me because I hate cold weather.

I hate Republicans.

Here in Raleigh - we always seem to vote in Dems for the house and state house & senate.
But you go to the northern part of the city and that all changes...

13. Don't believe the hype.
Winter starts in late December or January and lasts into March. Even during winter, it is often above freezing during the day. It got down to zero (fahrenheit) last year, and everyone was freaking out about RECORD COLD TEMPERATURES!!! So it ain't necessarily warm all year round, but isn't what I'd call cold either.

Oh yeah. I should probably mention that I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. So my standards of what is and is not cold might differ from yours.

15. Last year's winter was more cold than usual
Our *low* was -20, which hasn't been seen in 20 years. The coldest it usually gets is a few days of lows a few degrees below 0- it doesn't last that long. BUT if you're comparing it to cold of NC, it's definitely much colder. It IS milder along the coast, but only for about 15 or so miles inland, and it's more expensive.

31. I wouldn't rule out a winter lasting 6 months.
I'd say 4 to 6 months of winter weather. The season can start as early as November and typically lasts through the first week or two of April. Quite often you don't get any winter-like weather until late December or early January.

Isn't intelligent enough to live in a place like Connecticut.

If fact it might be the reason that people have higher IQ's up North. When it's cold outside, we stay in.....and read.

Havn't seen it get below -18F in Hartford county. And it never stays there for long. Usually can't stay consistently below freezing for more than a month.

or Michigan. And it also depends where in CT you are. I live along the South Eastern shorline. We tend to be a little warmer than Northern Ct and we tend to get less snow. Unless its a coastal storm. The North West corner which is Litchfield county seems to get the most snow. Since Ct is in Southern New England it is warmer than VT or ME. I really don't think the Winters here are bad. You do get a bad one once in a while The Winter of '95 was bad. Snow every other day and we ran out of salt and ice. But then you have other Winters where you barely get snow at all. Generally speaking the Winters are not bad at all.

Edit: Hey if you and other DU'ers move up here we might get our population back and get back the electoral vote we lost! LOL.

28. We're probably going to move to Connecticut next summer.
My husband intends on going to school there. If he doesn't get accepted for some reason, we'll probably be going back to Maine (where we are originally from). I already know what to expect weather wise. It gets cold, but I don't think it's unbearable. The New England climate seems to not get as cold in the winter, and as hot in the summer as it does in places like Minnesota, from what I have observed. My mom is from Minnesota, so I've been there a few times. I'm living in Florida right now. I can't wait to experience the other seasons besides summer again. I'm even looking forward to shoveling snow again. How weird is that?

53. I lived in Waterford for a few years.
The town taxes were low because of Millstone being there. I don't think they are as low now but still lower than a lot of other towns. I think its a pretty nice town. I don't think its "hick" at all as most of the people there are middle class to upper middle class and educated. Its is quiet though. Its clean, and the town does a very good job of plowing the snow in the Winter, unlike New London which does a terrible job. Aside from the mall and the Speedway it is more built up then when I lived there. There is a new shopping area across from the mall. It has a Borders, Linens & Things, Best Buy, Panetta Bakery, Ruby Tuedsay's and a number of other stores. One thing I always hated about Waterford though is the amount of traffic lights! They are everywhere! I live in Gales Ferry now but I still go to Waterford a lot. I have an aunt who lives there.

37. Hey! Hey! Conn is NOT cold. VT is COLD! Trust me!
But I love it!
You just stay inside. DUH!

When I moved to VT from CA, my friends were worried.
I just said, "it's not like I'm gonna stand at the end of my drive way and wave at cars! I'm INSIDE!"

So, it was below zero for a whole month last winter (Jan-Feb).
It was NOT that way in Conn.

Winter is a way of renewing yourself. I find a lot more wholeness in a life where I'm not running 24/7 x 365 -- like I was in CA. When winter comes, I turn inside -- it's not just a metaphor.

We are SANE up here in VT and the rest of the northeast, because we are intelligent, whole, independent people. We spend those winters reading, writing, and creating art, music, and literature. If not doing, we are supporting each other. It's a great feeling!
