10. Southern hockey should be outlawed
If you can't skate at an outdoor rink during the winter, you should not be allowed to have a professional hockey team.

Of course, with this protracted lockout, I wonder how many teams will be back and how many will fold.

9. Wild fan here...
....at least we got college. But that's only two days a week.

At least we got they high-school tourney. But that's not until March.

They're airing the Wild's first home win on TV tonight. I miss Jacque Lemaire. And one of our former players died (Sergei Zholtok) yesterday.

and died in the arms of Darby Hendrickson in the locker room. I don't know the details but he had been having heart problems the past few years and even had to take time off to recover. His ticker seems to have stopped. Gee whiz, 31 years young. :-(

18. Oh my God!
That's horrible. Sergei Zholtok. Damn.

That's almost as unbelievable as the election results.

And how ironic he died with Darby Hendrickson next to him, another former member of the Wild.

22. Here's an article from the Edmonton Sun.
http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/EdmontonSun/Sports/2004/11/04/699921.html

Ex-Oiler Sergei Zholtok dead at 31

Ex-Oiler Sergei Zholtok died yesterday of an apparent heart ailment. He was Zholtok was playing hockey for the club team in his home city of Riga, the Latvian capital, when he became ill near the end of a game. European news reports say he suffered from cardiac arrhythmia.

Zholtok came to Edmonton from the Montreal Canadiens in a Dec. 18, 2000 trade for Chad Kilger, but never found his stride with the Oilers. He didn't score a goal in his first five weeks here and in 37 games with the Oilers managed four goals and 16 assists. The following summer Edmonton traded him to Minnesota for a seventh-round draft choice. His career rebounded with the Wild, where he scored 19 and 16 goals the next two seasons.

Zholtok was drafted by Boston in 1992, 55th overall, and played 588 NHL games with the Bruins, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Minnesota and Nashville. The Predators acquired him last March.

"We are all saddened and shocked to hear of Sergei's sudden passing," Nashville GM David Poile said.

"He was a hard-working player who was well-liked by his teammates and coaches.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the Zholtok family, his wife, Anna, and his sons, Edgar and Nikita."

The six-foot-one centre, called Zholi by teammates, missed games a couple of times last year with mysterious health ailments that included dizziness and fatigue.

After leaving a game in January 2003, he was kept in hospital overnight for observation. He eventually was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia.

25. Hockey reminds me of Maine and college.
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 10:52 PM by babyreblin
I went to a hockey school, University of Maine. I remember they won the NCAA hockey championship once when I was going to school there (and also once when I was 13). I went to the games a few times because they were free for students. The head hockey coach unexpectedly died of cancer during my last year of college. That was real sad.

26. I was at a bar tonight and hockey was on,
I got so excited. Then I moved closer and realized they are so pathetic that they are replaying old NHL games. :-(

Without hockey, there's no reason to visit Detroit this Thanksgiving. :-(

34. I miss hockey as well...
especially since I live in close enough proximity to get Hockey Night In Canada.

I love hockey partly because it is refreshingly devoid of the Bible-Belt loons who actually believe God gives a rat's about the outcome of a sporting event.

37. Thank you for the NHL strike!
Elitserien (Swedish National Hockey League) has never been as good.

Unfortunately, It seems like a bunch of Swedes who usually plays in the NHL will end their careers at home (such as Forsberg), but it is interesting times now as a lot of US and Canadian player are here, and more will follow suit after christmas!

At least our national team finally underwent a generational change. Out with Salo, Forsberg and the rest and in with the Sedin twins etc.

Karjala Cup starts tomorrow!
