I too suffer from insomnia. During a physio-psych class I learned that hystamine is the hormone in your brain that triggers wakefulness. By taking Benadryl (an anti-hystamine) you will block that chemical and become very droooousy.... (yawn!)
This is safe and has no sleeping pill side-effects... and I checked it out with a psychiatrist friend who told me that he often tells patients to take benadryl for insomnia.
If you are still having trouble, try some other things: get more excercise, establish regular bed/wake times, use your bed only for sleeping, don't eat after 7:00.
Hope that helps!
:-)

It's easier to fall asleep in bed than in front of a computer. :)

I wake up at 4 every morning now. Mine just started with the rigged election and I decided to take advantage of this free time and write. You could crochet, paint, remodel a room, yada, yada, yada
Or have sex, with yourself or someone else.

I woke up when the wind rattled my windows at 4:50 and was thinking about precincts and ballots. I have some depression setting in here.

Tuesday night I was a wreck. Mild panic attack - I sat there shaking uncontrollably until 3 am, finally got to sleep, but only fitfully due to nightmares (whose content I won't describe, but I'm sure you can guess), then awoke for good at 7. Wednesday was a total wash for me.
But last night was just the usual, classic insomnia I get all the time - asleep at a normal hour, awake at some ridiculous time for no reason, and unable to sleep again. It happens two or three times a week. ARRRRGH.

I cannot fall asleep tossing and turning in bed. I have to do something to make me sleepy, then walk off to bed. Reading can put me to sleep. The TV has a way of doing it too.

12. I suffered horrible insomnia 10-12 years ago. |

Warm milk and frequent exercise was the short term answer. But what worked for me long term was working hard to not worry about things I couldn't change. Of course, that will only work if worry is the source of your insomnia.

when it's really bad for me, I sleep on the couch with the tv on an inane sitcom turned really low. Just so you can barely hear it. You'll start concentrating on trying to hear it and it helps turn off the rest of your brain long enough to fall asleep.
Oh - and DON'T take any naps during the day no matter how tired you are.
And if you get B vitamins, look for the Vitamin B complex.
