Any Karaoke singers on DU? What's your best tune? |
|
How many drinks before you're ready to sing? How often do you sing? Won any contests yet? Are you a Karaoke Addict?

2. I have to sing before I drink. |
|
My fave --with buddy Dave -- is the Beatles' "You're Going to Lose that Girl." Dave sings lead and I sing backup.
I sing early, then I start drinking. But I'll be a Supreme to anyone else's Diana Ross.
I've always wanted to sing R.E.M.'s "Fall on Me" with two other karaoke-ers who know the song, because there are 3 separate lyrics in it for 3 singers if they can harmonize well.

They really have to put better pre-amps in those things. I'm a trained singer and most of the units get overloaded and distort or start clipping.

200 watts a channel pushing a pair of Klipsch 301s and SM 58 mikes! You can be a star on my rig! I can even put the bright lights on you! I had to give up the clubs due to doctor's orders but damn it was a blast workin' the live gong show thang! I still go out and sing once in a while! The only time my amp shuts down, is if someone screams Really loud and I'm really riding the gain! I sing loud also!

4. "Son of a Preacher Man"--Dusty Springfield, or... |
|
"Give Me One Reason To Stay Here"--Tracy Chapman. In my range.
And I don't need to drink beforehand, either.

9. My one and only karaoke effort |
|
was performing "You're So Vain" in a lesbian bar in Columbus along with my partner, who can actually sing. Since I can't, I was reduced to sort of miming the lyrics as I croaked (the plane flying to Nova Scotia, etc.).
Afterwards there was an extremely faint smattering of applause. Em, who had conducted us to this den, said, "Wow, you got applauded. Not everyone gets applauded."
Still, I'm keeping the day job.
C ya,

11. I do karaoke only when I'm in Japan |
|
Every karaoke bar has a couple of English-language songs on hand, and Americans who are taken out for a session are usually urged to sing something like "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" or "My Way," but I enjoy shocking Japanese people by singing "Namida no Sanbashi" ("Wharf of Tears") which is a tear-jerking ballad popular during my student days (the late 1970s).
I have a definite hammy streak, so I actually enjoy karaoke.

12. Funny you should mention that |
|
I did karoake on Saturday night. I got to sing four times, as it wasn't crowded. I sang "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane, "Constant Craving" by kd lang (one of my better songs), "These Boots are Made for Walking" by Nancy Sinatra, and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler (got a standing O, thank you very much).
Best song I ever performed was last week at Live Band Karaoke, where I did "White Rabbit".

|
I like "White Rabbit"! Sounds like we have some fine singers on DU! I had about 250 tunes worked up everything from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa! We gonna' have to have a DU karaoke bash to send Bush off! I have about 6,000 songs on cdg, lots of good rock and pop! I've got all your tunes!

17. That sounds like a plan |
|
Hope you've got some cool retro eighties tunes for me! Those are really hard to find for some reason. They have all the cheesy ones (like Journey, Poison, etc) but none of the really good tunes of that decade. Maybe they just aren't available on cd-g?
I love to do karaoke. I used to be a professional singer, but circumstances dictate that I actually make money, so now I just sing where and whenever I can. Karaoke fits the bill. And I *always* tip the karaoke host!

16. Anything by Gershwin(s), Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, etc. |
|
Sinatra stuff. It takes 4 stiff Scotch & sodas or 5 or 6 beers. Enough to lose my inhibitions (MEGA!), but not so much I start to slur. It's a fine line. When the moon is right, and the crowd is amiable, and I get into the mood, I can do a pretty convincing Ol' Blue Eyes.
I was in Amsterdam the day Sinatra died. Went to The Family Bar (go figure) that evening, just off the Leidseplein. Not strictly a karaoke place, but they had the equipment. No one else was singing that night. The owner is a friend. I got just oiled enough to ask for them to turn it on and hand me the mike. I did every Sinatra song they had, about a dozen. People started to come in from the street. By about song 3 it was SRO. I never paid for another drink that night.
Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you. That night, I ate the bear. It was dreamy. ;-)

19. I tried to have something for everyone! |
|
Several show tunes and lots of Sinatra! I drank half of a half gallon of Absolut one night and was up in a crowded bar singing 'Luck Be A Lady' and really getting into it! I had lost about 70 pounds and my pants were knid of baggy and they fell completely down around my ankles, midsong! I was so blasted I didn't even notice and went right on singin' without missing a note! My wife finally got up onstage and pulled my drawers up for me and I kept on singing!
The next day she told me what happened and I couldn't remember any of it! She said I got a standing ovation! I thought she was fibbing to me until months later we ran into a lady at karaoke at another bar who told me the whole story again! I guess my brain automaticly shut out the trauma as it should have, for it's own protection that night
