Me, I'd grab my CD Jukebox since a bulk of my CD are in there (it holds 200). I'd grab my computer box (I'll worry about the periphreals if I have a chance) and grab the top shelf of my bookshelf (it has all my political books that I love to read). Finally I'd grab a few clean clothes, some personal pictures and if I have time all my Led Zeppelin vinyl.

On edit note - all the Led Zeppelin Vinyl is going first. I'm not losing those precious albums!

5. I've got 4 small draw string bags with all my camping stuff.

And a big hiking pack that holds them. The small bags are so they can fit in the hold of a kayak (I like to do a 2 week kayak trip each year). It's got all the essentials, like a small tent, a tiny butane oven, dried foods, 2 changes of clothes, etc., etc...

So I'd take that stuff, then my computer and maybe 5 books. Extra shoes, socks. A coat. Then I'd be set. :)

I think I could get that stuff in the car in about 10 minutes, so then I guess I'd watch a movie for 20 minutes. :P

I do live in the epicenter of the attacks. It basically has all that common sense stuff you'd need in your average natural disaster, like battery-powered radio and TV, flashlight, extra batteries, change of clothes, boots, bandages. No duct tape though! And hopefully I'd be taking my car, although I fear we'd have to take my husband's car, because we can't sleep in mine :-(.

So I grab that, start up ol' Gus, and while he's warming up, unplug the phone and power and satellite cable, pile anything on the floor that's gonna fall there anyway (square tire city). to grab most of the "must haves." The problem is -- where is all this stuff going to go? My Volvo wagon would rival the Joad family jalopy coming out of the dust bowl!

The short list: My wife, our 2 cats, the emergency packs (includes all basics, first aid, food, radio, etc.), my Hopi katsina carvings, my Zuni fetish carvings, as many Navajo rugs as I could carry, family photo albums, a warm jacket, good walking shoes, all necessary medications, my lucky cap.

Somehow, I keep getting this image of the Spanish conquistadores, so laden down with spoils that they could barely move, being overrun and mowed down by the native people that they exploited!

insurance documents, financial documents, pets, any jewelry and cash not in a safety deposit box, some of the sculptures in my collection (they are small), photos, copies of my published books and a few magazines with my stories in them, um, what else? I now have two vehicles which we can use for evacuation, so I can take more. Some of my better shoes and boots. CDs with my insurance photographs and vacation photographs on them. Food, water, pet food, medicine, vitamins. Books and CDs can be replaced by insurance, and I couldn't possibly take them all anyway. Binoculars. Some of the bird guides but probably not all of them. Cameras. Spotting scope. SOme clothes.

On Edit: I have never evacuated with a computer, and I'm surprised that so many people say they do. One computer is very like another, isn't it? And they would take up so much room better used for irreplaceable items. During my disaster, I used the public library. They have lots of computers. Just back up your photos or any other valuable information on a CD and take the CDs. Hauling around an old computer is silly; let the insurance company buy you a new one if need be.

Even though I have insurance on it, it would be a pain to reset the thing back up and wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to disconnect the cables and toss it in the toyota. Sometime next week I'll have my laptop and of course that would go too.

9. Passport, drivers' license, credit card and checkbooks. Insurance policies.

The computer gets left at home. Furniture, papers, books, other clothes, rest of CDs, computer peripherals get left at home.

48. Interesting question

My house burned down five years ago. My crappy Grand Am caught fire in the attached garage because of a faulty fuel system. We lost everything including a mother cat and her kittens who decided to move the babies upstairs. I couldn't save them because the stairs were on fire. The fire was extremely violent because it started in the garage. We had spent almost ten years refurbishing the 1860 home. We lost everything including our faith in the insurance industry. My kids were off site as was my husband and the dog, but what we lost will never be replaced. Really nothing was saved. I got out, but that was it. It haunts me to this day that I should have done something to save the kittens.
