How Idealistic am I?
I'm 19, a virgin, waiting till I'm married. I campaigned for Kerry. And, here's the kicker, I'm reading Ayn Rand FOR FUN on top of my classwork. geeze...sometimes I make myself sick. How about you? Were you this idealistic at 19? Did you lose it and become cynical? If so, When?

1. Nope - older, still idealistic

Though, I have to admit, with a somewhat dark edge to it...

And remember, Ayn Rand is more freeper than liberal.

Have you seen the Simpsons Episode that Maggie goes to the "Ayn Rand Day School"? Very excellent summation of Rand's "take what you want before someone else takes it" philosophy.

Long live your idealism! The saddest thing is seeing someone lose their sense that the world can be made a better place.

And kudos to you for deciding to wait until marriage to have sex!

2. thanks!
And point taken about Rand. I try to balance things, look at both sides that then make up my mind. When I first got interested in politics, I first read Moore's book and then Coulter's, just to check out the extrems of both sides.
All I have to say is, I'd better be married by the time i'm 30, otherwise I will call up every guy I've ever known!

3. What you do about sex is your own busines, but remember this..
..your sexual morality is not the full measure of ones morality. Remember the lessons of the Golden Rule and the Sermon on the Mount (even if you are not Christian). For me, these give me all the reasons I need to be a Democrat. Be true to what you think if right. Thank you for working for John Kerry.

4. I'm an Architect
I read the Fountainhead, the biggest bunch of bullsh*t I ever read, nothing truthfull or anywhere near reality. After reading this, I purged our home library of any of her books. Read Steinbeck!

6. Yes--didn't drink/smoke/have sex till I was 21.

I was very similar to you sounds like (except Ayn Rand--I have thrown her books at the wall many times, violently dislike her :grr: )

Of course, now I have a kid.

You never know what's going to happen, LOL. But, I've still not smoked or done illegal drugs.

7. Sounds like me at that age.

That would be hm.... 1987.

Sex at 21, because I wanted it to be with a guy worth waiting for.

After years of Reagan, Bush 1 about to be in office.

My idealism has been severely tempered -- I now think it's possible that the bad guys sometimes DO win in the end.

But I still think ideals are worth fighting for.

Fight now while you're young... fight your ASS off. When you have kids they're your first priority.

It's much much harder to stand in front of a tank when you're wearing a baby in a Snugli.

edited to add: be sure to read Primo Levi and some other good guys. Rand believed in the "virtue of selfishness.":puke:

8. All my life. But I never lost anything.
Except my virginity. With affirmation from *, I seriously doubt that any of us has 4 years to live.

9. When I was 19, I was a virgin and was going to be until I was married.
I read a lot, and did everything I was supposed to, including having a bible study in my dorm. Yeah. Now I'm 25, about to graduate from college. I lost my virginity when I was 20, and i turned cynical after people started dropping dead in my family. My family has had more than their fair share of tragedy. And I'm not even going to get into what the loss of this election has done to my outlook, but I will say my level of cynicism has gotten far deeper. You'll grow out of all of that too. My advice? Find a nice boy where you are and get horizontal. Don't deny yourself pleasure, because you never know when that button's gonna be pushed, and we'll all be dead.
