You knew it would happen...No Baseball in DC!!! |
|
Not a surprise...the DC Government always has a way of screwing things up...after screaming that they had no baseball for 30 years they finally get a team...but alas their celebrated incompetence again rears its ugly head. At least I won't have to listen to the whining about no baseball in DC...they had it and they blew it!!! http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27710-2004Nov5.htmlP.S. We need a sports forum!

Here is a link for those who don't like to register. I assume it is essentially the same (since I don't like to register myself) http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2002083735_base06.html

MLB used Washington for 30 years as a scare tactic to bribe cities into building new stadiums at taxpayer's expense ("If you don't build our team a new stadium, we'll move the team to Washington). It worked beautifully. As a consequence, MLB didn't dare move a team to DC because they would have lost that leverage. So we went decades without a team.
Finally, along comes Montreal, a good team in a city with little fan interest. The team had some great players and were competitive and, if it had moved to Washington in 2002, would have drawn huge crowds. We desperately wanted a baseball team.
But, no. MLB bought the team and gutted it. They refused to pay the kind of salaries Montreal's good players were worth, so the good players all left and signed contracts with other teams, teams whose owners also owned the Expos (if this wasn't a conflict of interest, I don't know what is!).
Now the team is gutted. It's minor leagues are thin. Now that MLB can't squeeze another penny out of this team, they want to move the team to Washington, and they want the taxpayers to build them a nice new stadium.
To MLB I can only say, SCREW YOU! Take your lousy team and give it to some other sucker. Just how stupid do they think Washingtonians are? If they want to take advantage of the huge potential Washington fan base, let MLB pay for the stadium.
