1. Deviled beef bones
Short ribs roasting, covered with a paste of softened sweet butter, curry powder, cayenne and black peppers, Worcestshire sauce, salt, English mustard. Roast at 400 for 1-1/2 hours.

Served with corn on the cob. Fresh string beans. I think a really tough Cabernet, too.

28. Authentic British recipe?
And did you start with short ribs, or were they the leftovers from a roast and Yorkshire Puddy?

Oh, man, that sounds good!

I'm having chicken tomorrow....:-(

33. Deviled Beef Bones Recipe
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 04:34 PM by womandingo
Yes, this is the real Brit recipe, usually made from a leftover standing rib roast. But, I buy short ribs. It's easier.

So, here you go:

6 Tbs. softened butter
1 Tb. Worcestshire sauce
1 Tb. dry English mustard
1 tsp. Madras curry powder (or any really pungent curry powder)
Freshly ground pepper
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 tsp. salt
3 lbs. lean short ribs, each 4 to 5 inches long

Preheat the oven to 450.

Make 1/4-inch-deep criss-cross cuts on the meaty part of the ribs. (This is so the butter mixture can sink down into the meat during the roasting.)

Sprinkle with salt and pepper, place them in one layer in a roasting pan, meat side up, and stick in the 450 oven for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, cream the butter in a bowl, and mix in the rest of the ingredients. (I sometimes add granulated garlic, if I feel like it.) Mix it up nice until it's a thick paste.

When the 10 minutes is up, take the ribs out of the oven, turn it down to 400.

Coat the criss-cut tops of the ribs with the butter mixture. Use it all up.

Stick back in the oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Eat like your life depended on it, and enjoy..................

34. Did that come from the Time-Life "Foods of the World" series?
I have the same recipe, and it sounds yummy.

I could go for a nice roast and an artery-clogging Yorkie puddy for Saturday dinner, then the ribs for Sunday...or Roast Sunday and ribs maybe Tuesday night...

Oh, hell, I don't have time to cook anyway. I'd use the short ribs, too....

Which reminds me, time to fire the grill and get the chicky breast a'grilling...

43. It sure did...................
Got that whole series back in the seventies, and it's never let me down yet.

If you have the French Provincial book in that series, check out the sausage and potato salad recipe. The potato salad is the best I've ever had - ungodly good.

And, in the China book, the sour-and-hot soup recipe has been my defining soup for the past thirty years. It's perfect.

The recipe for meatballs in the Italian one (I'm Italian) is better than anything I've ever tasted.

Nice catch, Bigg :)

48. I have a few from that series.
Picked 'em up here and there, some, I have the book and the spiral-bound recipe book, others, I have one or the other.

I was just reading the British one last week, that's how I caught you.

57. "gender non-specific"?
Where did THAT come from?

"caught" implies I was trying to get away with something. You've got a very strange way of determining gender-specificity, whatever that has to do with anything.

In any event, I just remembered that the original deviled beef bones recipe called for dredging the ribs in flour before putting them in the oven the first time. I skip that step. Don't especially miss it, either.

And, when my kids say "whatevah," they get sanctioned. They're smarter than that.

my goddamn roommate forgot about his pizza as he's watching fahrenHYPE 911. It's such a worthless movie that just rips on Michael Moore the whole time. While I agree that Mike stretches the truth, that's no reason to make a whole movie on..or two..or three. You'd think they would come up with their own ideas to make a conservative documentary...but no. Conservatives are not known for creativity.
