It was in the 70s this afternoon. It may be snowing up in the mountains, but they're about 100 miles away from where I am. I live outside Pueblo, which is flat prairie land - kinda like Kansas.

I'm a senior tech writer for a major defense contractor in Colorado Springs. My wife also posts here (she's "Mrs.COLiberal"), and many of my recent posts are responses to her from my office.

My degree is tech writing. I'd like to actually get into it -- been working as a programmer since before I graduated. What's it like working for a major defense contractor?
Also, do you ever feel conflicted between your beliefs and your employment? I'm not asking that to be accusatory, just out of curiosity. One of my good (and very liberal) friends is an electrical engineer with Lockheed Martin, and he wasn't sure he'd want to work on missles or the like due to his beliefs.
Also, Colorado's beautiful. I've been there a few times while visiting family in Wyoming.

I've documented radar installations and satellite systems. Jobs seem to be more stable in defense contracting because they work on multi-year contracts. But many places require security clearances - I got my Secret clearance a few years ago, which makes it much easier to get a defense job.

Ironic world.
BTW, that's how I met my guy and ended up going to grad school here in CO. We met via company email, me in HQ in CT and him in the Springs office. He works for a different defense contractor now.
It's people like you, MrsCOLiberal, and my fella that give me hope for the Springs and Southeastern Colorado. :hi:

59. But There are an Awful Lot of Assholes Around Here |
|
Like James Dobson & his misfits at Focus On The Family.
Ed Bircham, the local businessman who spews hatred in his newspaper ads.
And my "favorite" - Mike McKee, the guy who dressed up in sackcloth & ashes every year to protest the Gay Pride Parade. He was on a local talk show on KVOR a few days after the last parade, spewing crap from teh Bible and calling all the gays "Sodomites". I called in and told McKee I thought he was a sorry excuse for a Christian. he called me the Anti-Christ.
I wear that as a badge of honor... :-)

Of course we didn't know about the pet goat thing then. We were so innocent!
Though, really, I was still pretty angry and bitter over the stolen election. So I guess in retrospect, not that innocent.
Sigh.

Mrs. CO Liberal and I were living in Henderson, NV when I got a job offer from an HMO that was headquartered in Pueblo. We were packing up our apartment when we saw the first video of the Oklahome City bombing, and two days later, we were in a Hertz/Penske truck headed for Colorado. All the time, we were wondering if the bombers were in any of tha cars around us...

|
and one woman in the class brought in a chunk of concrete from the Murrow Building. Her father-in-law worked for the secret service, and he gave it to her family for whatever reason. We passed it around. Holding it felt like a hearing 168 people die. It felt like holding snakes. We all felt it. Very eerie and sad.
I was working at a computer company in Massachusetts in April, 1995, but my boss was from Oklahoma City. All his kids lived back there. It wasn't a good day for him.

29. There Are Events Like That In Our Lives... |
|
...that are etched in our memories. I'll be 52 later this month, and I remember exactly what I was doing when I heard about JFK, Malcolm X, Martin Luthur King, RFK, George Wallace, Reagan, Anwar Sadat, and Pope John Paul II being shot. I remember the Columbia and Challenger explosions. I believe that the shock of those events makes them unforgettable.

38. 40- to 50-Degree Temperature Shifts Between Day & Night |
|
We're at around 4,800 feet above sea level. At this altitude, there is a pronounced shift between daytime and nighttime temperatures. It can be over 100 on a summer day, and 50 to 60 at night - great sleeping weather!! Not like when I lived near Las Vegas, where it would be 105 during the day and only go down to 95 at night....

Back in September, Mrs. CO Liberal and I vacationed in Texas - we have friends there. We went to the Dr Pepper Museum in Waco - they have a soda fountain on the first floor that sells Dr Pepper with REAL SUGAR!!!! And you can buy Dr Pepper made with sugar (none of that corn sweetener crap) in many convenience stored. But it ain't cheap - a six-pack of six-ounce bottles goes for four bucks.

The GOP has been in complete control of Colorado government for the past two years, with the exception of Attorner General Ken Salazar. In that time, the state has drifted from one budget crisis to another, and the Republicans couldn't agree on a way to fix the no-fault insurance system before it expired. That put us back on a tort system, and no one has seen the reductions in premiums that we were promised. Plus they tried to push through a redidtricting scheme like Tom DeLay's in texas, only to be stopped by the courts.
In short, people got fed up and voted for Democrats.

OC, as you may recall, went bankrupt in 1994. Made the headlines everywhere! But no lessons were learned, still 'owned' by the Orange Reich. San Diego is on the verge of BK, totally run by the neocons who have been dipping into the pension fund. No outrage!
