I'm drinking sake tonight, but I don't know what kind.
The only English on the bottle is the price, which was on the high end. Over the last hour, I've looked up the prominent Kanji on the face of the bottle and I come up with

Tentaka Kuni Junmai

Hawk Country Sake??

Whatever it is, it's good stuff!! :D

1. Oh, sure, rub it in
bastard.

I'm glad you are enjoying it!

Are you drinking it cold, or warmed up?

What are you eating with it? Dried squid? I love dried squid with sake.

3. Heated, of course
I have one of those stainless steel contraptions from Starbucks that they steam milk in. Perfect for putting on the stove and warming up some Sake.

I might finish the whole bottle tonight. Just one of those weeks, y'know.

5. it's definitely a good week for it
that's for sure. :-)

you know, though, of course, that sake should be heated up by putting the sake holder - which should never be metal, only ceramic - in a bath of hot water. Not heated directly on a stove or anything.

4. Sake is very very good.
Try Tamon, it has little gold flakes in it. Suigei, is also very good, the drunken whale. Best if sipped out of a little wooden box like the old Japanese used to do. All I got is some pomegranate wine someone gave me, a bit sweet, but all I got.

8. Cool. I've been a Shirayuki guy for a long time.
But I'm getting the impression that's the Budweiser of Japanese sake, and I don't mean that in a good way.

13. Sake is unappreciated in the US
I too, never realized the diversity of Sake, until I went to a Japanese restaurant in town that had about 15 different types. There was a distinct difference between each variety. All were served slightly chilled and in a wooden box. I saw an episode of the thirsty traveler, on the food channel, about sake before going to this particular restaurant. So, I was not surprised when the waiter placed a wooden box on a plate then over filled the box, spilling several ounces on the plate. The tradition in Japan is that the restaurant wants to show that they are generous. Interesting how the Japanese society functions, always afraid of the possibility of insulting someone. Peace and enjoy.:toast:

17. So, do you know what kind of Sake this is??
'Hawk Country Sake' seems like a Japanese enough name for it, but I don't trust my Kanji translation any more than I trust Engrish. :)

18. Where did you get it?
I haven't seen the premium Japanese sake in stores. The only specialty store in Tucson that even has Sake is AJ fine foods, but I didn't recognize any of them. Most Sake sold in stores is the little server bottles, it may be good, I have never tried it. The stuff in the restaurant comes in a large bottle, 2 liters, who knows where they get the stuff. Probably a specialty importer.

19. My usual liquor store
Morgan's, which has served the Denver community since my house was a grass field in the 1920's. They have a pretty good stock of damn near everything; at least 20 varieties of sake populate their shelves. I even bought some Aurum there once, which I thought was illegal outside of Greece & Italy.

The drunkards who run the place were no help, though. They just referred to it as that funny bottle with the Egyptian heiroglyphs on it (Japanese kanji to me, but maybe I'm picky).

Falcon Country Sake is good enough for me. :D

20. Guess if its Kanji
it made in Japan. I agree with you, like wine, what ever you like is good. That is what I always hated about wine, the snooty elitist crap. I hear Rush Fatball loves Chateau Haut Brion, 62' is his favorite but he would settle for a younger vintage. At 1000$ a bottle he can blow himself, and he calls Kerry an elitist. His fat pannus and short phallus precludes auto fellatio. Oops, damn wine, I just continually digress.:toast:

26. Whoa whoa whoa!
I appreciate both hockey and Democracy.

Soon, I hope to appreciate sake as well.

My father tells the tale of shore leave in Hong Kong, drinking sake in an air conditioned bar. As he tells it, he doesn't remember much upon emerging into the heat of the outdoors except the ground coming up to meet him.

And that's a true story.

I've never tasted wolf-pussy. I'll take your word for it, though, since you're obviously familiar with that uh... unusual... taste. ;-)

21. Junmai is the purity designation
It means that the rice has been polished to about 65% of it's size before it's mixed with water and koji and then fermented. No additional alcohol is added in Junmai sake. It is traditionally served chilled, as usually only the non-designated sakes (i.e. the cheap stuff) are served warm.

Can you tell I spent over six years working at an Asian restaurant? :-) I attended about 10 sake seminars that I can recall over that time period.

More sake fun facts....sake is a brewed, fermented alcoholic beverage. States classify it as a wine, the federal government calls it beer when you sell it from state to state and a spirit when it's imported in from out of the country. Goofy, huh?

22. I like square pegs that don't fit in the round holes
:)

I had a bit of trouble translating the kanji for 'junmai'. All I could come up with is it described a certain kind of sake, but beyond that I could not ascertain.

I'm drinking the rest of the bottle without heating it, and it tastes just fine. :D

23. Chilled sake is similar to wine in it's complexity
Some sake is very herbal and green tasting, others are rather sweet with vanilla and spice flavors. There's even dessert sake that's unfiltered though a lot of people are turned off by it's appearance, as it's somewhat viscose and milky and looks rather rude, if you know what I mean. }(

The kind of sake you have also makes a mean saketini. If you take equal parts sake and super premium vodka (Belvedere or Goose), shake and serve it with a cucumber slice and a piece of pickled sushi ginger. It used to be one of my favorite drinks to make (and drink!). :-)
