3. I didn't want to go, and I wasn't allowed to go.
I didn't want to go because I didn't want to take a girl, except to just get high or something.

BUT

I couldn't go because my fundamentalist family did not believe in dancing. It was a sin. So, no proms.

If only they had known at the time that I was gay...

Wow, I'd have been all OVER that prom!

Straight people have it so easy in their teens!

4. Jesus, even I managed to find a prom date
Even though it was DnD night, and Doctor Who was on.

Although, to be fair, I did record Dr. Who. That was pretty cool, since I took a lot of drugs that night, and it gave me something to so the next morning, even though my mom kept asking me why I was playing the intro music over and over and over again. Now that I think about it, that's a whole other story, and probably not appropriate for this particular BB...

5. It was a complete gender-fuck
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 02:32 AM by haruka3_2000
I went with a female-to-male "gay" identified transgendered person. I am a lesbian. We were dating at the time and we wore matching tuxes. Nobody had a problem with it to our faces. A couple jocks apparently got uppity, but we were a complete hit. I was popular in HS, so we ended up in a ton of group shots. This bothered my mother. Since she had issues with my sexuality, she wanted everyone else to as well.

These days though, I'm more likely to show up at a formal event with a short skirt, low-cut shirt & "fuck-me" boots. This amuses my friends that knew me 5 years ago greatly. I also get great reactions since I normally dress pretty funky/indie. The only formal events I go are opening night parties for the theatre company I work for...so everyone sees me normally in tight ripped jeans, weird t-shirts and vintage button-down shirts, and then it's a shock when I appear in black formalwear. It's a good shock for my cast members though.

6. I didn't go but
heard from friends that when the names of the Prom King and Queen were announced, the kid who was named King was present and accounted for, but the girl who had been voted Queen was upstairs in a hotel room between the sheets with her date. The young stud is today known as Sen. George Allen, hard-core repuke of VA.

8. i went to both
my junior and senior prom. senior year, my date and i got bored as hell after an hour, and just left to watch movies. there was a creepy ass dj there, who had this big projection screen attached to a camera that he panned over the crowd. he spent a disturbingly large amount of camera time just a LITTLE below neck level

9. This lesbian brought her male gay friend---me in a tux, him in a dress
and wig. He was so convincing, many folks thought I'd brought a girl! Most people were amused, but a kid I'd gone to catechism (Catholic Sunday school) for years with hassled us on the dance floor (constantly making rude comments, and ultimately pulling off my date's wig). So I pulled the carnation out of his lapel, said "oops" and dropped it on the floor, then crushed it, and he punched me in the jaw! Went to tell a chaperone (where the heck are they when you need them?) and he laughed it off with the ol' "oh, boys will be boys."

Then the kid up the street told his mom that I went in drag, and she told my mom, and she yelled at me.

It was fun!

So this other boy I'd met at a Star Trek convention just adored me and asked me to his prom and I couldn't seem to get out of going, so I did. He went to a school in a different county, so I actually went dressed like a girl! Naturally----like all boyz interested in me back then----he soon figured out he was gay. (It was pretty obvious to the rest of the world.)

10. I went to my high school kegger. We didn't have a prom.
I also went to a very progressive Quaker school during my junior and senior year, where people felt quite comfortable being out. It was the homophobes who faced ostracism. 1975. How far we've regressed.

and no, the kegger was not official. We didn't have a prom and of course had major needs to celebrate. I doubt though that anyone didn't know about it.

20. And I'm not gay, LOL! It was just pointed out to me that I totally
misread this thread! I just thought that we were just trashing proms and I was on board for that! I did attend my prom, with a guy who was a good friend, but this "date" that we had pretty much spoiled the friendship.:-(

And then I went to boarding school, where we had this classy senior dance. And I guess that I belong on this thread, after all, because my date for that actually was gay. And another good friend. And my attending the dance with him didn't change a thing between us. We remained good friends. I had a much better time there and I think that he had a good time, too.:-)

22. Thank you, my friend! What would I ever do without you?!
No, I'm not gay, but I did date a gay guy. Odd, but true. And I do have gay friends, who would probably think I was a jerk for not noticing this. I do like women. I wouldn't trade my female friends for anything. It's interesting that this would come up, just now. I sent out one of those "get to know your friends" e-mails, yesterday, for the umpteenth time, and I think that I learned that one of my female friends is gay, which I never knew before. Anyway, thanks for looking out for your big sister.:pals:

26. I honestly have no idea. My female friends have told me.
I have been pretty good in discerning if male friends are gay, but I think it's much tougher to tell with women. But, maybe it's because I'm female. I had no clue that any of my female gay friends were gay. In fact, I actually argued with one of them about it, since I really didn't believe that she was. I guess that I just didn't want for her to have to go through this, since it is so hard, and I care about her and just want for her to be happy. Now, she has an uphill battle.:-(

I don't think that you can ever know, unless they tell you. Several of my friends have told me, like my friend, just today, and I am always surprised. I just wish that they had trusted me enough to tell me, earlier.

29. totally true
Sterotypes have every gay male being the effeminate type like that guy on that show or the lesbian being male as can be, of course gays and lesbians like heterosexuals come in all forms and shades of gray.

30. I have two childhood friends who grew up to be gay
I never would have imagined that they would, but, as a kid, I didn't even know what that meant. And it's strange, since one of them is very outspoken about it, and is a lawyer who works for liberal causes, while the other one just refuses to talk about it.

My former partner at work was all worried about his daughter attending one at her school. This was the first one that they had held in eight years, because of fears about school violence.:-(

15. I went!
I attended an all-boys' Catholic high school in the suburbs of New Orleans, LA. (YUM)

The prom brought certain, umm, expectations about what would go-on after the prom was over. Umm.. involving intimacy, etc. I was still deeply-closeted, so the solution to my prom problem was..
(drumroll, please)

I asked a Mormon girl to the prom.
My classmates were agog at her - beautiful girl.
But, alas, her father was sooooooo strict.
He insisted that I have her home by - *gasp!* - midnight.

You could imagine my disappointment.. :P
I'd have to drop her off at home and then resume partying with the boys..
such a shame..

We ended-up going to a bar, me, the guys, and some of their dates. I ended-up dirty dancing with the football player I'd been crushin' on, strangely enough. Such a hectic scene at that little dive. So dark. It was soooo weird, and he was sooooo hot.

=====

OKay, okay.. sarcasm aside, I dreaded and dreaded this prom. So much pressure, so much FEAR! I'd've been lynched had my classmates found-out. So when I came-up with the idea of asking the Mormon Girl Down the Street, I knew she'd go with me. And I knew that her father would allow it, given how he thought of me as "The Perfect Gentleman."

Oh, if only he knew, lol..

16. Nope. But I think for your poll's purposes, it doesn't matter...
1. I wasn't out
2. I wasn't interested in dating guys
3. I didn't dance
4. I didn't party
5. I hated the cliques -- and the prom seemed such a cliquish thing

Feh.

My friends and I weren't interested in spending lots of money on the prom, so we organized a party for that weekend instead. We named the party "The Morp". It was way more fun, and far cheaper.

You do understand that you have missed your one and only opportunity to wear a powder-blue polyester tuxedo trimmed in black velvet, don't you? (That reminds me, I still have to burn those pictures)

And on a more serious note, I hope they weren't too cruel to you. I want you to remember that you're much too tall to be made to feel small. If they didn't want you, they didn't know what the hell they were missing. ;)
