Poll question: Have you ever worn something and then returned it?
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 07:37 AM by sbj405
They've apparently got a database set up to check serial returners. So, have you guys ever worn something and then reutrned it.

1. Won't register, but
I usually buy clothes and rarely make returns.

I know some stores have people put in their names and addresses when they return something. But do they know how often a person buys from that store in general? I might make a lot of returns, but I might be making three times as many purchases too.

Shouldn't make a fucking difference anyway. We have the right to return... currently.

4. Yeah, the database thing is a bit creepy. Article also talks about

doctor databases of people who have files malpractice suits and one for landlords. I guess this is what car and home insurance have been doing for awhile. Still it's creepy.

2. do you mean for the purpose of being able to wear it once
and then return it? No - that is truly despicable. A couple of times I have returned something because I found I really hated it - like a shirt I bought that was nice in the store but I found when I wore it for a while it chafed my neck badly.

3. I think that's ok. Most of the stores I shop in have guarantee
that they will take it back no matter what (LL Bean, Lands End, Eddie Bauer, REI). The article specifically talks about Express, so perhaps this is a phenomenon among younger people. Though the tags are usually places in positions that would make it impossible to wear once and return.

7. As noted in the post below, tag guns are easily obtainable.
As easily obtainable as a Saturday Night Special, really.

5. Regrettably, I worked in retail for YEARS.

Upscale department stores, on commission (GACK!)

It's very, very, very, very common, and it's usually (bet you already figured this out) wealthier people who do it. I can't speak about men, but I saw it oodles of times.

I sold St. John, Escada, and the like, and it's really scary to think about. They should have been at "used" prices. They'd come back, wrinkled and reeking of scent, sometimes with makeup stains. The store REQUIRED us to return them for the "customer."

On "Special Occasion" garments, we would attach a hang tag right at the location of the right nipple that indicated that if the tag was removed, it couldn't be returned.

Most of the women must have owned a very easily obtainable tag gun. You can buy them at Staples.

Edit: the dry-cleaning bills in my department alone could have fed an entire homeless shelter for a week. :puke:

8. I gotta say, since I have lots o'retail experience, if "dicey"
returns were able to be stopped, clothing prices would drop dramatically.

There really are those who make a nice living out of fraudulent returns.

12. well I've learned something today
Never knew about the existence of "tag guns."

Be that as it may, I don't know how much lower clothing prices can go. In my area, clothes are cheaper than they were in the 1970s.

10. Never..
only defective merchandise, stuff I didn't like but never wore, or stuff that didn't hold up after one washing has ever been returned by me.

11. YES but the item was defective
It had rotten thread and ripped the second or third time I wore it. No problem getting a return on the item when I showed what was wrong.

In my area, you are not allowed to return evening items if the tags have been taken off -- but of course if the item is defective it's a different matter.
