Who's going or has gone deer hunting this year? |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 02:12 PM by alwynsw
Season opens Saturday here for modern firearms. Primitive weapons, archery, and black powder are over.
I need to refill my freezer. We ate the end of last year's harvest last week.
on edit: I posted this in the gungeon, but no one seems to be visiting there much lately since the AWB expired and I want to get a broader view of DU hunters and non-hunters.

in farm raised deer. IT found it's way into many of the U.S. deer farm via some infected stock from Canada a couple of years back.
If you check with some of the gourmet shops in the larger sities, some of them may still have a supplier.

State Fish & Game says we need to take nearly 500,000 stae wide just to hold the population in check.
I live near Ft. Knox. Because of the vast acerage closed to hunting on Knox, it's not uncommon to see 30 or 40 along a 4 mile stretch of U.S. 60 that goes through a part of the reservation. Anywhere from 4 or 5 to as many as 20 a week are hit on that stretch.

Let's see, I'm gonna go out in the woods and attempt to stalk some guys (and gals) who are in (usually) very familiar terrain that are carrying rifles that are far more powerful than military issue M-16's.
Yup. That's a recipe for disaster. Have a nice funeral. I would definitely shot back if deliberately shoot at. Some folks would just shoot because you ruined their hunt. I'm not condoning it, but they would shoot.
Are you tired of living?
edited because there are 2 "o's" in shoot.

I've always assumed hunting with a shotgun would be a pain in the ass. Not the shooting, but how do you get the shot out of the meat before you eat it? I always had this image of duck-hunting with a shotgun, and then finding all these little lead balls in the thing when I go to eat the thing.

I'm not kidding.
Shot in the meat (steel shot in the case of ducks) can be a problem.

17. I think thats why some hunters are missing teeth |
|
It would be a pain in the ass if you were taking a bite of meat and you ended up finding a piece of shrapnel in the meat and it got stuck between your teeth.
What if the bullet didn't go off and as you are biting into your steak the bullet goes off and it blows out all of your teeth.

I do hope you're kidding. Bullets don't "go off". All they are is a projectile. The goiing off part all happens in the firearm. Nothing explosive goes downrange, contrary to what Hollywood FX people would like us to believe.
I've bitten into bullet fragments and shot while eating. Unless it's just bad luck, you don't do any damage to your teeth. Lead is pretty soft.

you use much larger shot for hunting deer than for hunting ducks. OOO buck contains only 9 pellets per round.

If I was back in Michigan, I would definitely. I really want to try bow-hunting, though, because I feel it is far more challenging than firearm season. On the other side of the coin, I feel a clean firearm shot definitely decreases chances of the animal suffering.
Venison is amazingly delicious. When I FINALLY get out on my own, I'm done eating store bought farm-raised meat.

20. We make our own meat. |
|
My aunt has a huge farm about 15 miles out of town. So we keep a few cows out there for slaughter. And a few pigs too. We shoot them and butcher them. I don't like it, but we do it. I would rather us get our meat this way then from Albertsons. We have ten animals with 15 acres of nice fields and we control what they eat. And we have a few chickens in our backyard. They have lots of space and eat well.
I hate to kill them, but the kids must eat. We just try to give them the best life we can before they become a commodity in our quest for personal satisfaction.
