I'm your neighbor from Newton County, Arkansas. As you know, there are many churches here, including Bahai, Native American, and a Sufi center. You probably have read my letters to the editor about the lies the GOP has spread about the Bible, and that, though I am a liberal, I will be glad to provide you with one of my Bibles if you have lost yours. You might have heard some of your fellow Baptists explain about "wolves in sheep's clothing" and that a Christian must live his faith. No doubt you've seen some of the local pastors doing this. And, like me, you must be concerned about the fact that our state has sent a disproportionate number of National Guardsmen to Iraq. I hope, like me, you donated money to your local Guard unit so that they could be equipped with proper body armor. Finally, like me, I know you are amused by some of the ways Arkansans are described, but that after a while, stereotypes wear thin. I hope you read and listen to me and my friends (including Republicans) who are greatly worried about the fate of Social Security that you depend upon for your retirement.

Meanwhile, I haven't given up hope on you. I sincerely hope that people from the rest of the country haven't either.

Sorry, I don't find this funny. I don't know if you are, indeed, from Arkansas, but I can tell you that a person in my position (being non-Christian) must tread lightly indeed, but we are tolerated. The people here don't speak the way you imply, but some are filled with hate. I have met them face to face and it is not a pretty sight.

What I have been doing is trying to forge alliances with those who aren't so narrow minded-and you would be surprised how many there are. I've sent some to DU to get information-I'd feel bad if they saw this thread, as it would instill in them the stereotype of "Yankee Liberal" who looks down on Southerners.
