I'd love to hear your recommendations on great piano jazz. I just heard an incredibly beautiful tune by McCoy Tyner. I'll definitely be picking up some of his material (I'd appreciate Tyner album recommendations).
Who else should I be checking out?
Thanks!
Update: The tune I heard Tyner playing was 'She's Leaving Home' by the Beatles.

Anything whatsoever of his.
Listen to some Art Tatum to hear virtuousity beyond belief.
Listen to Cecil Taylor to hear what performing an exorcism on yourself sounds like.
On edit. Oh, and Thelonius Monk.

if you are into hard bop, his "Doin' the Thing live at the Village Vanguard" is just sick.

7. Bud Powell, Monk and Dave Brubeck |
|
Monk, along with Dizzy and Bird, is one of the founders of bebop; his off-tempo style isn't for everyone, but he's my fave. Brubeck suffered the sin of having a catchy hit (Take Five), and many people bag on him, but he's a great composer and player. Bud Powell will just blow your mind.

8. when you listen to Art Tatum, you'd swear that . . . |
|
there are two people playing . . . he's that amazing . . . then there's Thelonious Monk, who is also amazing, but in an entirely different way . . . and you might try some of Duke Ellington's solo piano stuff, without the orchestra . . .
