Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Now that the election's over, I just want to say how disgusted I was every time John Kerry talked about his "faith." He should have said, "I am a Catholic. That's all you - or anyone else - need to know."

If we have a candidate in 2008 who insists on pandering to people's religious beliefs (i.e., to their ignorance, insecurity, and need to feel immortal) I'm staying home.

Just once in my lifetime, I'd like to hear a politician say, "Well, you can believe whatever you want, but I consider religious beliefs to be no different than any other superstition. 'God' is an obsolete, irrelevant, unnecessary, and ultimately dangerous concept. I am embarrassed for those who continue to believe this nonsense."

When I was a boy, we were taught that all Protestants are going to hell. I still beleive that, but for very different reasons.....

2. Will Rogers wanted to go where the dogs go.
I prefer to go where there are no Republicans. I may take this with me to the next world.

8. When I was a kid I asked my mother if dogs go to heaven
she said no. At that point I decided I didn't want to go to heaven -- and I really doubted there was a god.

Will Rogers also said that he wasn't a member of an organized political party -- he was a democrat. (or something close to that).

3. Y'know, as a long-time agnostic, I somewhat agree with you.
I definitely think if a pol's professed religious beliefs are sincere, it can be very affecting and effective -- look at Jimmy Carter.

But I agree with you that if I have to watch another insincere profession of faith, I'm gonna hurl. I agree that any politician from either side who is uneasy discussing his (or her) faith in public should have the right to say, "look, folks -- I think faith is a private matter," without being treated as a pariah because s/he didn't want to divulge all the depths of his/her faith.

I don't really care, I'd be happy to vote for a Buddhist or an agnostic or atheist -- but I'm realistic, I know that the majority of voters for both parties call themselves Christians of some flavor or other. I just think people who consider faith a deeply private matter should be allowed to say so.

4. Nothing wrong with that.
After all, if the mythology is correct, hell is where all the interesting people will end up, anyway.

Now, heaven kind of sounds like my idea of hell.

6. I wonder how many people voted for or against
John Kerry because he is Catholic? I guess it's a small percentage, but I know Baptists that are married to Catholics who think their spouses are going to hell. Instead of the Mel Gibson scenario (his wife is Episcopalian and he said she's going to hell), it's the other way around. It's the Baptists that think the Catholics are going to Hell.

I don't think it's anyone's business, but George made it an issue to campaign on because he announced that God told him to do this, even though God told me He really didn't want him to.
