My last apartment had it and I was able to have one radiator on and the windows open all winter. Loved it!

7. I think I would really love this at home. |
|
Why isn't steam used more widely? It has to be pretty cheap, no?

12. And I think it's healthier and more efficient, too |
|
without the the air blown around by forced-air furnaces I had half the allergies. I don't know why they quit using them. My apartment's boilers are over 60 years old and still going strong--I doubt if you could get that out of a furnace.

2. How old is your apartment building? |
|
I lived in a place like that once - we had our windows open all winter.

14. Two snaps up: LAYERING is your answer. |
|
I understand your plight. The temperature has turned here (will be 20's only tomorrow) and at work the entire buidling is 80 degrees. It isn't even this hot in the summer.
So, I leave the house in full gear (fleece, gloves, turtleneck and more) and when I get out of the car and walk in the building: WHAM!
I'm layer now. So, when I leave the car and step into my office, I can actually get down to cotton and something breathable.
Last week I didn't do this and nearly passed out while I was at the chalkboard. I don't know if we can open the windows, but I wasn't prepared to layer down -- I was wearing a fleece and white turtleneck. But under the turtleneck I had on a purple bra. I know, TMI, but I didn't really need freshmen "boys" cracking wise over my bra for the next two weeks.
Sooooo LAYERS is my new mantra!

15. I own very few long sleeved shirts. |
|
I can never wear them - it is either 80 outside or 80 inside!

8. No opening windows / doors? |
|
What kind of messed up rule is that?
I suggest frequent breaks OUTSIDE. That or icepacks.
Yikes.

9. We physically cannot open windows |
|
short of busting them out. And we are behind security doors - so no leaving them open either.
I am in Hell.

they're at least trying to provide a reasonable facsimile of the ambience there.
How about soaking your head... tried that? ;)

13. I woke up to hot water dripping from an overhead pipe at 3 a.m. |
|
I like steam heat, I hate steam pipes. Daggin-fraggin plumber has to come fix it tonight and it will probably mean moving all my furniture around and cleaning up a few pounds of paint chips after he leaves.
