I actually like the new Tom Waits song. |
|
I heard "Make It Rain" while driving down to Chicago yesterday.
This is very new for me -- I've normally not enjoyed the man's voice at all.
So...those of you who know more about these things than I do...if I like this song, might I actually like this album?

2. Hmm. I don't think I can help here. |
|
I love the new song, but I love all Tom Waits. Really ALL Tom Waits. So I can't really objectively say I think this is that different from his normal stuff.

9. I loved Mule Variations so much. |
|
What an out-there album, but absolutely brilliant as far as I'm concerned. But then, this is why I can't objectively answer this question. Tom could poop in a CD case and I'd buy it.

this one just seems to go back to his roots, kind of... it sounds like his early stuff, which I thought he never could top. I don't know if this tops it, but it's way up there.

11. Have you actually heard his first 2 albums? |
|
I'd never heard them and I wasn't aware that I hadn't heard them until very recently. The reason I knew for sure I hadn't heard them is that...he didn't have that voice on the first two records. He didn't sounds anything like himself. I mean, you could tell from the lyrics and the phrasing that it was Tom, but it was Tom minus the gravel.
So, apparently, nothing happened to change his voice. He didn't get sick, develop polyps, anything like that. Once day, he woke up and it was just like that.
My theory is that he heard it in his head like that for so long that he WILLED it into being. :)

I was thinking Foreign Affairs / Nighthawks at the Diner era.
I'm gonna have to get those, now. :)

14. It's weird and cool at the same time. |
|
Kind of like when you're dating someone for a few months and you find out some really interesting and weird fact about them after thinking you know all that stuff already. Like that they have 6 toes or were born with a tail.

Normally...I find his stuff a little too abrasive. I like gravely, but that's gravely through a gravel filter. Or something.

4. I'd say its worth the risk |
|
If he has one poppy song he usually has a fairly accessible album out there. Tom is great, it takes a little listening, but when it hits, its worth the work. Rain Dogs, 'nuff said.
