Is "PETA" considered "mainstream" left, or...
Was in a discussion with a co-worker and just want the consensus before I finish "arguing" with him. On a scale of 0 to 10 with 0 being far, right wingers and 10 being far left wingers, where does PETA fall?

3. I'd put a good portion of them in the 15 range....
...I agree with some of their ideals, but I think some go to far (such as not testing new medicines on animals before human trials).

9. PETA is about as radical as you get.
They don't think you should keep pets, 'cos that's unjustly imprisoning animals.

" Following the recent bombing in Jerusalem in which a live donkey, laden with explosives, was blown up, shocking people of all nationalities around the world, PETA has written to Palestinian National Authority President Yasser Arafat asking that he urge those who listen to him to keep animals out of the conflict.

At PETA, we strive to end violence every day. As Albert Schweitzer stated, “Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace".

"
PETA’s letter to Yasser Arafat

February 3, 2003

Yasser Arafat, President
Palestinian National Authority
Ramallah, West Bank
Palestinian Authority

1 page via facsimile: 972 7 282 2365

Your Excellency:

I am writing from an organization dedicated to fighting animal abuse around the world. We have received many calls and letters from people shocked at the bombing in Jerusalem on January 26 in which a donkey, laden with explosives, was intentionally blown up.

All nations behave abominably in many ways when they are fighting their enemies, and animals are always caught in the crossfire. The U.S. Army abandoned thousands of loyal service dogs in Vietnam. Al-Qaeda and the British government have both used animals in hideously cruel biological weaponry tests. We watched on television as stray cats in your own compound fled as best they could from the Israeli bulldozers"

24. Whew...
Thanks for the replies. He was trying to argue that PETA was typical of the "mainstream left" or was a "little bit more to the left than most". It's actually refreshing to see that as a group, the consensus is that PETA is just *way* out there.

What started this discussion was that I was at Disneyland not too long ago and went on the Jungle Cruise... as a kid, I remember the guides using the cap gun to shoot the angry hippo (animatronics) to "save us", then they changed to firing a warning shot up in the air, and now they don't even use the guns at all. The guide said it was due to complaints from PETA.

28. It's good to know
that PETA's compassion is not limited to carbon-based life forms, but also extends to the protection of computerized fiberglass replicas. I certainly hope you are not using a rubber duckie in your bathtub. If so, shame on you.

Her father was a conservative judge. There are plenty of right-wingers who care more about animals than people.

32. Out past the orbit of Pluto
Left vs. right doesn't apply to PETA. They're authoritarians - they want to shove their values and their lifestyle down the throats of others.

They're good for a chuckle now and again.

33. I think we could learn a lot from them
Whacko? Maybe. Unconventional? Certainly. Lefty-left-left? Truly.

But they took an issue that everyone thought was crazy, animal rights, and made it mainstream. Not the strange "no pet" stuff, but they sure did a number on the fur industry.

We should be so lucky to have such an effect on current events.
