Tough Time Staying Off News Sites - Suggestions?
I'm a news junkie, but I have vowed no network or Internet news for several weeks. Problem is my web surfing habits are pretty dull and news-oriented. Stuff like cnn.com, msnbc.com, news.google.com, my.yahoo.com - with news links.

I don't know where to go on the Internet! Any good b-boards, discussions, humor sites or blogs out there? I've been reading Kos a bit, but would love other suggestions.

Thanks!

1. I live here at DU now.
My world is very small. Even Bob Dylan stopped his forum.

I can't believe how fast info comes along here first.

election night I kept impressing all my friends with my 'insider' info I get on the DU before it hits the networks!

DU rocks!

I would be lost without this place!

5. How about Buzzflash?
It's a pretty good way to keep up, but then you would have to spend time away from DU.

6. Good suggestion, thanks!
Actually I have a tabbed browser, and have dozens of windows open at a time. (I frequently open each DU thread I'm interested in in a new tab and cycle through the tabs closing as I read each thread.)

No such thing as not being able to multitask on the web! :D

7. Bartleby. If you must do news, just go to the AP Wire
http://www.bartleby.com/
and
http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/fronts/HOME
respectively.
Bartleby features just about every reference work in English imaginable, or at least one of each type. AP Wire is what most of the other news sites run a half hour later anyway, only (mostly) without the slant.
If you're unreligious and want a place where you don't have to apologize for it, there's Internet Infidels: http://www.iidb.org/vbb/index.php
I signed on when they had the brilliant ready.gov parody, but never got around to making a second post.

8. I read alternative news

and avoid mainstream TV and online unless someone sends me there for something specific.

I am reading so much lately that I am getting headaches and sound like someone speaking in talking points.

Blogs I like:
http://www.tompaine.com/blogs/
http://www.theleftcoaster.com/

Humor:
http://www.kirktoons.com/cartoons.html (there's a good toon up now called "Cats are Democrats"
http://www.theonion.com/

Countdown:

(this is depressing since it recalibrated after 11/2, however it's whole premise is that there will be an end eventually)

12. this is good for streaming...
http://www.democracynow.org/

I love Democracy Now! This news is truthful, and often heard about there before the mainstream.

Also http://www.fair.org/ Which is excellent for learning how to look at the news-they have a half hour radio show.

Also the newsletter Counterpunch is good. http://www.counterpunch.org/
