2. Exorcist, no question.
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 08:42 AM by FlashHarry
Still scares the shit out of me. By the way, if you're buying the DVD, don't buy "The Version You've Never Seen." That's the one where they inserted a bunch of extra footage. The original is waay better, and you can still see the footage as extras on the DVD.

By the way, I think the reason it's soooo scary is that the film's bad guy isn't an alien or a machete-wielding psycho, but The Devil, himself!

On edit: "Jaws" is one of the best films of all-time. It transcends the horror genre. In fact, I'm not even sure it it's a real 'horror' film.

4. is the extra one
the one that was released in theaters a little while ago?

I remember a scene of the girl walking down the stairs bent over backwards on her hands and feet.

8. Yep. The famous 'crabwalk' scene.
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 08:41 AM by FlashHarry
You still get that scene in the "25th Anniversary Edition," but it's in the extras, not in the main film, which is the version that was released in theaters in the early 70s.

33. they really screwed up a good thing and youre right Jaws is the best!
I was so bummed by that crapped up rereleased Exorcist. Exorcist III is also an excellent horror flick, probably better than the first. Jaws was in a world of its own when you saw it the first time you swam in more fear than any other film could possibly generate.

One of those dusk-to-dawn events. All the movies were horror flicks. No way you got sleepy that night. "Last House on the Left" played too. I can't recal the others....

Just an ominous, scary, creepy movie.

If I were separating supernatural horror from slasher horror I would go with either the Excorcist or the Omen though.

11. Hellraiser II
"It is not hands that call us, it is DESIRE..." the Pinhead

Creepy music well orchestrated, pretty good special effects (it IS a film from the 80's), and REALLY nasty demons.

A hit of acid, a tub of popcorn and a beer. 2 hours and one nervous breakdown later.....

12. The Thing (Dir: John Carpenter)
Carpenter takes 50's paranoia and ratchets it up to unbelievably tense levels as the members of an Antarctic research station are slowly and completely consumed by an alien creature with the power to duplicate its victims.

Virtuouso performances from both Kurt Russel (as MacCready), Wilfred Brimley (as Blair), and Keith David (as Childs) beautifully illustrate the tension of a group of intimately familiar men who lose both trust in each other, and in themselves.

The best non-CGI effects ever put to film, by Rob Bottin, fully round out the experience of a quiet and remote alien invasion.

It also features the absolute best ending dialogue in any horror movie, ever.

Childs: Fire's got the temperature up all over camp.
MacCreedy: Where'd you go Childs.
Childs: I thought I saw Blair, I went after him but got lost.
MacCreedy: (hands Child's the bottle of scotch he's been drinking from) the way I see it if any of us have any surprises we might as well get it over with.
Childs: what do we do now? (drinks and hands the bottle back)
MacCreedy: Why don't we wait here a while, and see what happens.
Childs and MacCreedy stare at one another.

Even though both men know that within hours they will freeze to death they still cannot trust the identy of each other, or themselves. Absolutely gripping.

The Thing, scary, gory, and a study in trust. The Thing, the best horror movie ever made.

The original "Night of the Living Dead". I was in high school when they made it in a town next to me...They made it in the Pittsburgh area, Evans City-Zielenople area near Mars Pa.

Bill Cardill from WIIC-TV also know as "Chilly Billy Cardilli" was in it too.

Seeing locals in the movie and such in you own backyard can be really frightening to a kid.....

36. I agree too!
The Shining is one of those movies that I love, that I just can't watch anymore. Less to do with being afraid of Jack Nicholson's character than the atmosphere that Kubrick creates. It's incredible.

37. Bram Stoker's Dracula
I love Coppola's admittedly fussy direction, the special effects are glorious, the overall gothic vibe is totally unnerving. But it's the WAY-over-the-top performances by Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins that really carry the day. I watch this every Halloween, and it never fails to creep me out.

Honorary mention: Sleepy Hollow. The mood of that film is so oppressive it's hard to watch the whole thing. But Christina Ricci makes it worth the effort. :P

The oldies mentioned here are all good... Night of the Living Dead, which I first saw as a theatrical release, rattled me good at the time. So did The Omega Man (I was just a kid, but that one gave me nightmares for a week).
