2. It's a common misconception.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the Mexican army over the French.

3. Common misconception
Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) has become such a big commercial success in the US. Another reason to party and sell beer and sell T-shirts.
Here's a nice little site with a summary.
http://latino.sscnet.ucla.edu/demo/cinco.html
It was basically a win of an important battle(Batalla de Puebla) over the French.

Mexican Indepdence day, Diez y seis de Septiembre (16 September) is the celebration of Mexico's independence from Spain.
Nice little summary here on this web board although the links to the RedLatina site are no longer working.

The description is accurate. El Grito de Dolores and Father Hidalgo were very important to the revolutionary forces.

Que Viva La Libertad!

5. No, Sept. 16 -- Hidalgo started the uprising against the Spanish in 1810.
May 5 is about a victory over the French in 1863 -- the French went on to conquer Mexico and put their puppet emperor, Maximilian, on the 'throne' of Mexico. Mexican insurgents ultimately won, once the U.S. had finished off the Civil War and could put its own pressure on the French to decamp.
